2018 Preview | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Vestavia Hills completed the 2017 season with a 4-6 record. Last year Vestavia Hills just missed making the playoffs with a fifth place finish in Class 7A region three with a 3-4 region record. Vestavia Hills was inconsistent offensively last year and they need some improvement if the Rebels want to be competitive. They only averaged 15.0 points a game. Since 2010, Vestavia Hills has gone a combined 58-35. Their 62.0% winning percentage ranks 11th in Class 7A over the past eight seasons. Over the past 25 seasons, Vestavia Hills has gone a combined 211-79. Their 73.0% winning percentage ranks 3rd in Class 7A and 21st in the AHSAA. The Rebels have been successful on the football field with twenty-three winning seasons during this time. The Rebels are led by head coach Buddy Anderson who is entering his season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 329-146 over the past seasons at Vestavia Hills. Under his direction the Rebels have qualified for the playoffs a total of thirty times. They have won sixteen region crowns with Coach Anderson. Coach Anderson has won two state championships at Vestavia Hills, the last coming in 1998. Coach Anderson's overall record as a head football coach in season stands at 329-146 (69.3%). His 329 wins rank 1st among active coaches in the AHSAA. He has a 47-28 record in the playoffs during his career. The playoff victories rank with the best among active coaches. The Vestavia Hills Rebels will play in Class 7A region three during the 2018 season. The Rebels have one of the toughest schedules in Class 7A. Their opponents had a combined record of 77-39 last season. That ranks 3rd in Class 7A and 8th in the AHSAA. Region three will be one of the most competitive regions in any classification this season. With a little luck and some improvement, the Rebels could find themselves challenging for one of the playoff spots for region three this season. Vestavia Hills missed the playoffs the past couple of seasons but hope to return to the post season in 2018. The Rebels open the 2018 season at home against non-region opponent Homewood on Friday, August 31 at Thompson Reynolds Stadium/Buddy Anderson Field. Last year the Homewood Patriots finished with an overall record of 10-2 and in first place in Class 6A region five. The Patriots lost in the second round of the Class 6A playoffs to Clay-Chalkville by a score of 30-0. Vestavia Hills and Homewood have met a total of 52 times on the football field. The Rebels have a 31-21-0 record against the Patriots. They last met in 2017 with Homewood winning by a score of 6-0. Vestavia Hills returns 7A All-State linebacker Cooper Bishop. He was named to the honorable mention team last season. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
