2018 Preview | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Vina finished the 2017 season with a disappointing 1-9 record. Last year Vina just missed making the playoffs with a fifth place finish in Class 1A region eight with a 1-5 region record. The Red Devils last playoff victory came during the 1987 season. They would love to break through this year with a post season win. Vina was inconsistent offensively last year and they need some improvement if the Red Devils want to be competitive. They only averaged 15.2 points a game. Vina struggled on the defensive side of the football last year. The defense found little success in stopping opposing offenses as they gave up an average of 37.7 points a game. Since 2010, the Vina football program has struggled with a record of 16-65. Over the past 24 seasons, Vina has not won much with a record of 44-179. Their 20.0% winning percentage ranks 58th in Class 1A and 373rd in the AHSAA. The Red Devils have struggled on the football field with no winning seasons during this time. Their last winning season was 1989. The Red Devils are led by head coach Jason Harris who is entering his second season at the helm. His team finished with a 1-9 record in his first season at Vina. The Red Devils have yet to reach the playoffs under his direction. They have not won a region crown with Coach Harris. Coach Harris' overall record as a head football coach in one season stands at 1-9 (10.0%). The Vina Red Devils will play in Class 1A region eight during the 2018 season. It will be an uphill battle for the Red Devils if they hope to grab one of the four playoff slots in region eight this season. After just a single win last year, Vina will be hopeful of winning a few more games this season. Vina simply does not have the numbers to be competitive on the football field at this time. With just 60 students, the Red Devils are one of the smallest schools playing the game and have little chance of being successful. The Red Devils open the 2018 season at home against non-region opponent Marion County on Friday, August 24 at Franklin-Hester Stadium. Last year the Marion County Red Raiders finished with an overall record of 2-8 and in fifth place in Class 1A region five. The Red Raiders closed out the regular season with a loss to Sumiton Christian by a score of 56-55. Vina and Marion County have met a total of 16 times on the football field. The Red Devils have a 3-13-0 record against the Red Raiders. They last met in 1993 with Marion County winning by a score of 28-0. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Great Moments in Alabama High School Football History
The Tuscaloosa Black Bears were considered one of the best programs in the nation from 1925-1931. Their record over that span was an amazing 61-0-3.
