2018 Preview | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Tharptown finished the 2017 season with a disappointing 1-9 record. Last year Tharptown finished seventh in Class 1A region eight with a 1-5 region record and failed to qualify for the playoffs. The Wildcats have never qualified for a playoff spot and would love to break that streak this season. The Wildcats have never won a playoff game in the school's history. They would like to break through and pick up that first post season victory in 2018. The offense struggled putting points on the score board as Tharptown averaged scoring just 7.8 points a game. The Wildcats also struggled on the defensive side of the football as they found little success in stopping opposing offenses and allowed an average of 44.4 points a game. The Wildcats would prefer to forget the past two seasons as they have finished with a 2-18 record. Since 2010, the Tharptown football program has struggled with a record of 14-66. Over the past 12 seasons, Tharptown has not won much with a record of 25-91. Their 22.0% winning percentage ranks 55th in Class 2A and 371st in the AHSAA. The Wildcats have struggled on the football field with only two winning seasons during this time. The Wildcats are led by head coach Kevin Lacey who is entering his third season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 2-18 over the past two seasons at Tharptown. The Wildcats have yet to reach the playoffs under his direction. They have not won a region crown with Coach Lacey. Coach Lacey's overall record as a head football coach in two season stands at 2-18 (10.0%). The Tharptown Wildcats will play in Class 2A region seven during the 2018 season. The Wildcats move up in classification to Class 2A. They may find the going slightly tougher with the move. The Wildcats enter the 2018 season in the middle of a 7 game losing streak. They would like nothing better than to end the string of losses early in the season. This season, the Wildcats will be a long shot for one of the four playoff spots in region seven. The Wildcats open the 2018 season at home against non-region opponent Shoals Christian on Friday, August 24. Last year the Shoals Christian Flame finished with an overall record of 1-9 and in sixth place in Class 1A region eight. The Flame closed out the regular season with a loss to Mars Hill by a score of 56-6. Tharptown and Shoals Christian have met a total of 15 times on the football field. The Wildcats have a 6-9-0 record against the Flame. They last met in 2017 with Tharptown winning by a score of 38-28. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
