2018 Preview | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Brilliant finished the 2017 season with a disappointing 2-8 record. Last year Brilliant finished seventh in Class 1A region five with a 0-6 region record and failed to qualify for the playoffs. The offense struggled putting points on the score board as Brilliant averaged scoring just 10.9 points a game. The Tigers also struggled on the defensive side of the football as they found little success in stopping opposing offenses and allowed an average of 42.0 points a game. The Tigers would prefer to forget the past two seasons as they have finished with a 2-18 record. Since 2010, the Brilliant football program has struggled with a record of 18-64. Over the past 25 seasons, Brilliant has not won much with a record of 82-165. Their 33.0% winning percentage ranks 50th in Class 1A and 324th in the AHSAA. The Tigers are led by head coach Brian Gunnels who is entering his second season at the helm. His team finished with a 2-8 record in his first season at Brilliant. The Tigers saw improvement from a 0-10 record the season before coach Gunnels arrived. The Tigers have yet to reach the playoffs under his direction. They have not won a region crown with Coach Gunnels. Coach Gunnels' overall record as a head football coach in one season stands at 2-8 (20.0%). The Brilliant Tigers will play in Class 1A region six during the 2018 season. Following realignment, the Tigers remain in 1A but move from region five over to region six. This season, the Tigers will be a long shot for one of the four playoff spots in region six. Brilliant simply does not have the numbers to be competitive on the football field at this time. With just 47 students, the Tigers are one of the smallest schools playing the game and have little chance of being successful. The Tigers open the 2018 season at home against non-region opponent Vina on Friday, August 31 at Tiger Stadium. Last year the Vina Red Devils finished with an overall record of 1-9 and in fifth place in Class 1A region eight. Brilliant and Vina have met a total of 25 times on the football field. The Tigers have a 21-4-0 record against the Red Devils. They last met in 2017 with Brilliant winning by a score of 14-12. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
