 2018 Preview 


       Athens completed the 2017 season with a 5-6 record. With their 4-3 region record and a third place finish in Class 6A region eight, the Golden Eagles earned a spot in the playoffs in 2017. Athens's season came to an end in the first round of the playoffs when they fell to Clay-Chalkville by a score of 21-0.

       Since 2010, Athens has gone a combined 50-60. Their 46.0% winning percentage ranks 41st in Class 6A over the past eight seasons.

       Over the past 29 seasons, Athens has managed to compile a record of 166-124. Their 57.0% winning percentage ranks 24th in Class 6A and 110th in the AHSAA.




       The Golden Eagles are led by head coach Cody Gross who is entering his third season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 8-13 over the past two seasons at Athens. Under his direction the Golden Eagles have qualified for the playoffs once. They have not won a region crown with Coach Gross.

       Coach Gross' overall record as a head football coach in six season stands at 35-35 (50.0%). Over the course of his career, Coach Gross' teams have qualified for the playoffs a total of four times and won one region championship.

       The Athens Golden Eagles will play in Class 6A region seven during the 2018 season. Following realignment, the Golden Eagles remain in 6A but move from region eight over to region seven.

       The Golden Eagles will be in the mix for one of the last two playoff spots in region seven this season.

       The Golden Eagles open the 2018 season on the road against non-region opponent Gardxendale on Friday, August 31.

       This will be the first meeting between Athens and Gardxendale on the football field.

       Athens returns 6A All-State  offensive lineman Kannon Biggs. He was named to the honorable mention team last season.
