2018 Preview | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Chelsea finished the 2017 season with a disappointing 2-8 record. Last year Chelsea just missed making the playoffs with a fifth place finish in Class 6A region three with a 2-4 region record. Chelsea took a step backwards last year with their first losing season since 2013. The Hornets lost as many games as in any season since 2009. The Hornets hope to rebound after a down year. Last season they struggled winning just two games which followed a 8-3 record in 2016. Chelsea was inconsistent offensively last year and they need some improvement if the Hornets want to be competitive. They only averaged 17.8 points a game. Since 2010, Chelsea has gone a combined 46-38. Their 55.0% winning percentage ranks 28th in Class 6A over the past eight seasons. Over the past 25 seasons, Chelsea has managed to compile a record of 122-134. Their 48.0% winning percentage ranks 32nd in Class 6A and 212nd in the AHSAA. The Hornets will be under the direction of new head football coach Dustin Goodwin as they enter the 2018 season. Coach Goodwin's overall record as a head football coach in three season stands at 21-12 (63.6%). Over the course of his career, Coach Goodwin's teams have qualified for the playoffs a total of three times and won one region championship. The Chelsea Hornets will play in Class 6A region five during the 2018 season. Following realignment, the Hornets remain in 6A but move from region three over to region five. It will be an uphill battle for the Hornets if they hope to grab one of the four playoff slots in region five this season. After just 2 wins last year, Chelsea will be hoping to become more competitive in the region. The Hornets open the 2018 season on the road against non-region opponent Oak Mountain on Friday, August 24 at Heardmont Park Sportsplex/Eagle Stadium. Last year the Oak Mountain Eagles finished with an overall record of 5-5 and in sixth place in Class 7A region three. The Eagles ended last season on a positive note with a win over Hazel Green by a score of 36-29 after failing to gain a playoff spot. Chelsea and Oak Mountain have met a total of 13 times on the football field. The Hornets have a 3-10-0 record against the Eagles. They last met in 2017 with Oak Mountain winning by a score of 21-10. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
