 2018 Preview

Haleyville completed the 2017 season with a 4-7 record. With their 3-3 region record and a fourth place finish in Class 4A region six, the Lions earned a spot in the playoffs in 2017. Haleyville's season came to an end in the first round of the playoffs when they fell to Rogers by a score of 45-7.

Haleyville took a step backwards last year with their first losing season since 2011. The Lions lost as many games as in any season since 2001. The Lions hope to rebound after a down year. Last season they struggled winning just four games which followed a 9-2 record in 2016.

Haleyville was inconsistent offensively last year and they need some improvement if the Lions want to be competitive. They only averaged 19.4 points a game.

Since 2010, Haleyville has gone a combined 54-35. Their 61.0% winning percentage ranks 12th in Class 4A over the past eight seasons.

Over the past 25 seasons, Haleyville has managed to compile a record of 134-122. Their 52.0% winning percentage ranks 22nd in Class 4A and 165th in the AHSAA.

The Lions are led by head coach Todd McNutt who is entering his second season at the helm. His team finished with a 4-7 record in his first season at Haleyville. Under his direction the Lions have qualified for the playoffs once. They have not won a region crown with Coach McNutt.

Coach McNutt's overall record as a head football coach in one season stands at 4-7 (36.4%).

The Haleyville Lions will play in Class 4A region five during the 2018 season. Following realignment, the Lions remain in 4A but move from region six over to region five.

The Lions will be in the mix for one of the last two playoff spots in region five this season. They have qualified for the playoffs every year since 2011 and are hopeful to continue that streak in 2018.

The Lions open the 2018 season on the road against non-region opponent Winfield on Friday, August 24 at Estes Hudson Stadium. Last year the Winfield Pirates finished with an overall record of 5-5 and in sixth place in Class 4A region six. The Pirates ended last season on a positive note with a win over Lamar County by a score of 28-7 after failing to gain a playoff spot.

Haleyville and Winfield have met a total of 65 times on the football field. The Lions have a 26-36-3 record against the Pirates. They last met in 2017 with Haleyville winning by a score of 10-7.

Great Moments in Alabama High School Football History

In 1969 the two point conversion was adopted for play following a touchdown. Until that time all conversions were worth one point.
