2018 Preview | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Winfield completed the 2017 season with a 5-5 record. Last year Winfield finished sixth in Class 4A region six with a 2-4 region record and failed to qualify for the playoffs. Winfield was inconsistent offensively last year and they need some improvement if the Pirates want to be competitive. They only averaged 18.3 points a game. Since 2010, Winfield has gone a combined 51-35. Their 59.0% winning percentage ranks 21st in Class 3A over the past eight seasons. Over the past 25 seasons, Winfield has managed to compile a record of 165-107. Their 61.0% winning percentage ranks 10th in Class 3A and 81st in the AHSAA. The Pirates are led by head coach David McKinney who is entering his sixth season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 34-21 over the past five seasons at Winfield. Under his direction the Pirates have qualified for the playoffs a total of four times. They have won one region crown with Coach McKinney. Coach McKinney's overall record as a head football coach in eleven season stands at 86-43 (66.7%). Over the course of his career, Coach McKinney's teams have qualified for the playoffs a total of ten times and won three region championships. The Winfield Pirates will play in Class 3A region four during the 2018 season. The Pirates may find the schedule slightly easier this season with the move down in classification from Class 4A to 3A. They will compete in region four this year. With a little luck and some improvement, the Pirates could find themselves challenging for one of the playoff spots for region four this season. Winfield came up short of the playoffs last year but are optimistic of a return to the post season this year. The Pirates open the 2018 season at home against non-region opponent Haleyville on Friday, August 24 at Estes Hudson Stadium. Last year the Haleyville Lions finished with an overall record of 4-7 and in fourth place in Class 4A region six. The Lions lost in the first round of the Class 4A playoffs to Rogers by a score of 45-7. Winfield and Haleyville have met a total of 68 times on the football field. The Pirates have a 38-27-3 record against the Lions. They last met in 2017 with Haleyville winning by a score of 10-7. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
