2018 Preview | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Lincoln finished the 2017 season with a disappointing 1-9 record. Last year Lincoln finished seventh in Class 5A region four with a 1-5 region record and failed to qualify for the playoffs. The Golden Bears lost as many games as in any season since 2010. The defense allowed a team record 396 points last season. Lincoln struggled on the defensive side of the football last year. The defense found little success in stopping opposing offenses as they gave up an average of 39.6 points a game. Since 2010, Lincoln has gone a combined 34-55. Their 38.0% winning percentage ranks 38th in Class 4A over the past eight seasons. Over the past 25 seasons, Lincoln has managed to compile a record of 140-135. Their 51.0% winning percentage ranks 24th in Class 4A and 171st in the AHSAA. The Golden Bears are led by head coach Matt Zedaker who is entering his second season at the helm. His team finished with a 1-9 record in his first season at Lincoln. The Golden Bears have yet to reach the playoffs under his direction. They have not won a region crown with Coach Zedaker. Coach Zedaker's overall record as a head football coach in one season stands at 1-9 (10.0%). The Lincoln Golden Bears will play in Class 4A region four during the 2018 season. The Golden Bears may find the schedule slightly easier this season with the move down in classification from Class 5A to 4A. They will compete in region four this year. Overall, the region is among the weakest in the state. Qualifying for one of the playoffs spots could be a little easier. It will be an uphill battle for the Golden Bears if they hope to grab one of the four playoff slots in region four this season. After just a single win last year, Lincoln will be hopeful of winning a few more games this season. The Golden Bears open the 2018 season at home against non-region opponent Southside Gadsden on Friday, August 24 at Keith Howard Memorial Stadium. Last year the Southside Gadsden Panthers finished with an overall record of 4-6 and in sixth place in Class 6A region seven. The Panthers ended last season on a positive note with a win over Glencoe by a score of 56-0 after failing to gain a playoff spot. Lincoln and Southside Gadsden have met a total of 14 times on the football field. The Golden Bears have a 8-6-0 record against the Panthers. They last met in 1971 with Lincoln winning by a score of 39-16. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
