2018 Preview | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Stanhope Elmore completed the 2017 season with a 5-6 record. With their 3-3 region record and a fourth place finish in Class 6A region two, the Mustangs earned a spot in the playoffs in 2017. Stanhope Elmore's season came to an end in the first round of the playoffs when they fell to Hillcrest Tuscaloosa by a score of 34-0. It marked the first time since the 2014 season that the Mustangs qualified for the playoffs. Stanhope Elmore was inconsistent offensively last year and they need some improvement if the Mustangs want to be competitive. They only averaged 15.5 points a game. Since 2010, Stanhope Elmore has gone a combined 42-43. Their 49.0% winning percentage ranks 32nd in Class 6A over the past eight seasons. Over the past 25 seasons, Stanhope Elmore has managed to compile a record of 169-104. Their 62.0% winning percentage ranks 17th in Class 6A and 78th in the AHSAA. The Mustangs are led by head coach Brian Bradford who is entering his second season at the helm. His team finished with a 5-6 record in his first season at Stanhope Elmore. The Mustangs saw improvement from a 4-6 record the season before coach Bradford arrived. Under his direction the Mustangs have qualified for the playoffs once. They have not won a region crown with Coach Bradford. Coach Bradford's overall record as a head football coach in four season stands at 14-27 (34.1%). Over the course of his career, Coach Bradford's teams have qualified for the playoffs a total of one time . The Stanhope Elmore Mustangs will play in Class 6A region three during the 2018 season. Following realignment, the Mustangs remain in 6A but move from region two over to region three. Region three will be one of the most competitive regions in any classification this season. With a little luck and some improvement, the Mustangs could find themselves challenging for one of the playoff spots for region three this season. The Mustangs open the 2018 season on the road against non-region opponent Chilton County on Friday, August 24 at Tiger Stadium. Last year the Chilton County Tigers finished with an overall record of 1-9 and in seventh place in Class 6A region three. Stanhope Elmore and Chilton County have met a total of 23 times on the football field. The Mustangs have a 22-1-0 record against the Tigers.
