2022 Preview | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Fyffe completed the 2021 season with a 10-2 record. Last year Fyffe captured the region seven title and a number one seed in the Class 3A playoffs. They finished region play with a 5-1 record. Fyffe lost in the quarter-finals of the playoffs last season to a good Saks team by a score of 14-7. The Red Devils lost as many games as in any season since 2015. The Red Devils hope to get back closer to the 15-0 record in 2020. The defense was very stingy last season as Fyffe ranked 8th in the AHSAA. The defense allowed only 8.9 points a game. Over the past two seasons the Red Devils have gone 25-2 and will be looking to continue that winning tradition. As one of the best football programs in the state since 2010, Fyffe has gone a combined 153-11. Their 93.3% winning percentage ranks 1st in Class 2A over the past twelve seasons. Over the past 25 seasons, Fyffe has gone a combined 277-44. Their 86.0% winning percentage ranks 1st in Class 2A and 1st in the AHSAA. The Red Devils have been successful on the football field with twenty-five winning seasons during this time. Their last losing season was 1996. The Red Devils are led by head coach Paul Benefield who is entering his twenty-sixth season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 277-44 over the past twenty-five seasons at Fyffe. Under his direction the Red Devils have qualified for the playoffs a total of twenty-four times. They have won seventeen region crowns with Coach Benefield. Coach Benefield has won five state championships at Fyffe, the last coming in 2020. Coach Benefield's overall record as a head football coach in thirty season stands at 322-55 (85.4%). His 322 wins rank 3rd among active coaches in the AHSAA. Over the course of his career, Coach Benefield's teams have qualified for the playoffs a total of twenty-eight times and won nineteen region championships. He has a 58-23 record in the playoffs during his career. The playoff victories rank with the best among active coaches. The Fyffe Red Devils will play in Class 2A region seven during the 2022 season. The Red Devils may find the schedule slightly easier this season with the move down in classification from Class 3A to 2A. They will compete in region seven this year. The Red Devils have one of the toughest schedules in Class 2A. Their opponents had a combined record of 59-48 last season. That ranks 7th in Class 2A and 94th in the AHSAA. While most teams rebuild during the off season, Fyffe has been a consistent winner the past few years and will simply reload this season. The Red Devils enter the season with expectations of not only a region title but reaching the state championship game. They are considered one the favorites in region seven and could very well be representing the North in the Class 2A title game. The Red Devils have succeeded in reaching the playoffs every year since 2000 and this year should be no exception. The Red Devils open the 2022 season on the road against non-region opponent Geraldine on Friday, August 26 at Coolidge-Isbell Field. Last year the Geraldine Bulldogs finished with an overall record of 7-4 and in third place in Class 3A region seven. The Bulldogs lost in the first round of the Class 3A playoffs to Ohatchee by a score of 34-13. Fyffe and Geraldine have met a total of 83 times on the football field. The Red Devils have a 46-35-2 record against the Bulldogs. They last met in 2021 with Geraldine winning by a score of 20-19. Fyffe returns 3A All-State sophomore offensive lineman Tucker Wilks. He was named to the first team last season. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
