2022 Preview | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Mars Hill completed the 2021 season with a 10-4 record. Last year Mars Hill captured the region eight title and a number one seed in the Class 2A playoffs. They finished region play with a 6-0 record. Mars Hill made a nice playoff run in 2021, reaching the semi-finals before falling to a very good Cleveland team by the score of 21-14. Over the past two seasons the Panthers have gone 23-6 and will be looking to continue that winning tradition. Mars Hill is a relatively new football program having fielded a team only eight seasons. They have managed a record of 61-39 over the past eight years. The Panthers are led by head coach Darrell Higgins who is entering his seventh season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 58-22 over the past six seasons at Mars Hill. Under his direction the Panthers have qualified for the playoffs a total of five times. They have won four region crowns with Coach Higgins. Coach Higgins has won two state championships at Mars Hill, the last coming in 2020. Coach Higgins' overall record as a head football coach in six season stands at 58-22 (72.5%). The Mars Hill Panthers will play in Class 3A region eight during the 2022 season. The Panthers move up in classification to Class 3A. They may find the going slightly tougher with the move. Mars Hill will face six opponents that reached the playoffs last season. The Panthers enter the 2022 season having won 25 straight region games. The Panthers should be in contention for a playoff spot in region eight this season. They will be looking to gain an advantage by hosting a first round postseason game. The Panthers open the 2022 season at home against non-region opponent Cullman on Friday, August 19 at Mars Hill Stadium. Last year the Cullman Bearcats finished with an overall record of 7-4 and in third place in Class 6A region eight. The Bearcats lost in the first round of the Class 6A playoffs to Jackson-Olin by a score of 22-14. Mars Hill and Cullman have met a total of 4 times on the football field. The Panthers have a 2-2-0 record against the Bearcats. They last met in 2021 with Cullman winning by a score of 49-7. Mars Hill returns 2A All-State Junior defensive back Damian Thompson. He was named to the first team last season. The Panthers also return Senior offensive lineman Koby Keenum. He was named to the first team. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
