2022 Preview | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Murphy finished the 2021 season with a disappointing 2-8 record. Last year Murphy finished seventh in Class 7A region one with a 2-6 region record and failed to qualify for the playoffs. The Panthers lost as many games as in any season since 1992. The offense struggled putting points on the score board as Murphy averaged scoring just 12.4 points a game. Since 2010, Murphy has gone a combined 65-63. Their 50.8% winning percentage ranks 33rd in Class 6A over the past twelve seasons. Over the past 25 seasons, Murphy has managed to compile a record of 157-116. Their 58.0% winning percentage ranks 23rd in Class 6A and 108th in the AHSAA. The Panthers will be under the direction of new head football coach John McKenzie as they enter the 2022 season. Coach McKenzie served as the head football coach at Vigor in 2021. Coach McKenzie's overall record as a head football coach in two season stands at 19-6 (76.0%). Over the course of his career, Coach McKenzie's teams have qualified for the playoffs a total of two times and won one region championship. Coach McKenzie won a state championship at Vigor in 2021. The Murphy Panthers will play in Class 6A region one during the 2022 season. The Panthers may find the schedule slightly easier this season with the move down in classification from Class 7A to 6A. They will compete in region one this year. The Panthers have one of the toughest schedules in Class 6A. Their opponents had a combined record of 65-38 last season. That ranks 4th in Class 6A and 18th in the AHSAA. Murphy will face six opponents that reached the playoffs last season. It will be an uphill battle for the Panthers if they hope to grab one of the four playoff slots in region one this season. After just 2 wins last year, Murphy will be hoping to become more competitive in the region. The Panthers open the 2022 season on the road against region opponent Saraland on Friday, August 26 at Spartans Stadium. Last year the Saraland Spartans finished with an overall record of 10-3 and in first place in Class 6A region one. The Spartans lost in the quarter-finals round of the Class 6A playoffs to Hillcrest Tuscaloosa by a score of 24-16. Murphy and Saraland have met a total of 4 times on the football field. The Panthers have a 1-3-0 record against the Spartans. They last met in 2017 with Saraland winning by a score of 25-21. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
