 2022 Preview

Saraland completed the 2021 season with a 10-3 record. Last year Saraland captured the region one title and a number one seed in the Class 6A playoffs. They finished region play with a 7-0 record. Saraland lost in the quarter-finals of the playoffs last season to a good Hillcrest Tuscaloosa team by a score of 24-16.

Over the past two seasons the Spartans have gone 21-6 and will be looking to continue that winning tradition. Since 2010, Saraland has gone a combined 107-41. Their 72.3% winning percentage ranks 11th in Class 6A over the past twelve seasons.

Over the past 12 seasons, Saraland has gone a combined 107-41. Their 72.0% winning percentage ranks 7th in Class 6A and 29th in the AHSAA. Their last losing season was 2010.

The Spartans are led by head coach Jeff Kelly who is entering his twelveth season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 104-34 over the past eleven seasons at Saraland. Under his direction the Spartans have qualified for the playoffs a total of eleven times. They have won two region crowns with Coach Kelly.

Coach Kelly's overall record as a head football coach in eighteen season stands at 151-68 (68.9%). His 151 wins rank 27th among active coaches in the AHSAA. Over the course of his career, Coach Kelly's teams have qualified for the playoffs a total of sixteen times and won three region championships.

Coach Kelly says a trio of offensive weapons in sophomores KJ Lacey, Santae McWilliams and Ryan Williams will be key to the Spartans success this season. He also thinks the team is in good shape talent wise with the younger players. He is very high on his young quarterback Lacey thinking he could be as good as any QB in the country.

The Saraland Spartans will play in Class 6A region one during the 2022 season. Saraland will face six opponents that reached the playoffs last season.

The Spartans enter the 2022 season riding a 8 game regular season winning streak. Saraland has won 7 consecutive region games. They have won 10 straight games on their home turf at Spartans Stadium.

The Spartans enter the season with expectations of not only a region title but reaching the state championship game. They are considered one the favorites in region one and should be a team in the thick of the hunt to represent the South in the Class 6A Super Seven come December. The Spartans have succeeded in reaching the playoffs every year since 2010 and this year should be no exception.

The Spartans open the 2022 season on the road against non-region opponent Daphne on Friday, August 19 at Jubilee Stadium. Last year the Daphne Trojans finished with an overall record of 5-5 and in fourth place in Class 7A region one. The Trojans lost in the first round of the Class 7A playoffs to Central Phenix City by a score of 38-7.

Saraland and Daphne have met a total of 7 times on the football field. The Spartans have a 5-2-0 record against the Trojans. They last met in 2019 with Saraland winning by a score of 49-13.
