2022 Preview | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Phillips completed the 2021 season with a 4-7 record. With their 4-3 region record and a fourth place finish in Class 1A region eight, the Bears earned a spot in the playoffs in 2021. Phillips's season came to an end in the first round of the playoffs when they fell to Pickens County by a score of 51-21. It marked the first time since the 2018 season that the Bears qualified for the playoffs. Since 2010, Phillips has gone a combined 55-74. Their 42.6% winning percentage ranks 33rd in Class 1A over the past twelve seasons. Over the past 25 seasons, Phillips has managed to compile a record of 103-160. Their 39.0% winning percentage ranks 41st in Class 1A and 294th in the AHSAA. The Bears are led by head coach Adam Lawler who is entering his fourth season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 9-22 over the past three seasons at Phillips. Under his direction the Bears have qualified for the playoffs once. They have not won a region crown with Coach Lawler. Coach Lawler's overall record as a head football coach in three season stands at 9-22 (29.0%). The Phillips Bears will play in Class 1A region eight during the 2022 season. Overall, the region is among the weakest in the state. Qualifying for one of the playoffs spots could be a little easier. With a little luck and some improvement, the Bears could find themselves challenging for one of the playoff spots for region eight this season. The Bears open the 2022 season on the road against non-region opponent Tharptown on Friday, August 26 at Tharptown Stadium. Last year the Tharptown Wildcats finished with an overall record of 4-6 and in seventh place in Class 2A region eight. The Wildcats ended last season on a positive note with a win over Vina by a score of 28-0 after failing to gain a playoff spot. Phillips and Tharptown have met a total of 15 times on the football field. The Bears have a 10-5-0 record against the Wildcats. They last met in 2021 with Tharptown winning by a score of 1-0. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
