2022 Preview | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Straughn completed the 2021 season with a 7-4 record. With their 5-2 region record and a second place finish in Class 4A region two, the Tigers earned a spot in the playoffs in 2021. Straughn's season came to an end in the first round of the playoffs when they fell to Cherokee County by a score of 34-26. The Tigers won as many games as in any season since 2014. It marked the first time since the 2016 season that the Tigers qualified for the playoffs. Since 2010, Straughn has gone a combined 70-62. Their 53.0% winning percentage ranks 29th in Class 3A over the past twelve seasons. Over the past 25 seasons, Straughn has managed to compile a record of 157-123. Their 56.0% winning percentage ranks 23rd in Class 3A and 136th in the AHSAA. The Tigers are led by head coach Ashley Kilcrease who is entering his second season at the helm. His team finished with a 7-4 record in his first season at Straughn. The Tigers saw improvement from a 5-5 record the season before coach Kilcrease arrived. Under his direction the Tigers have qualified for the playoffs once. They have not won a region crown with Coach Kilcrease. Coach Kilcrease's overall record as a head football coach in six season stands at 55-20 (73.3%). Over the course of his career, Coach Kilcrease's teams have qualified for the playoffs a total of six times and won two region championships. The Straughn Tigers will play in Class 3A region two during the 2022 season. The Tigers may find the schedule slightly easier this season with the move down in classification from Class 4A to 3A. They will compete in region two this year. Overall, the region is among the weakest in the state. Qualifying for one of the playoffs spots could be a little easier. The Tigers should be in contention for a playoff spot in region two this season. They will be looking to gain an advantage by hosting a first round postseason game. The Tigers open the 2022 season at home against region opponent Pike County on Friday, August 26 at Straughn Tiger Stadium. Last year the Pike County Bulldogs finished with an overall record of 0-9 and in eighth place in Class 3A region four. The Bulldogs closed out the regular season with a loss to Abbeville by a score of 37-21. Straughn and Pike County have met a total of 11 times on the football field. The Tigers have a 4-7-0 record against the Bulldogs. They last met in 2019 with Pike County winning by a score of 44-6. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
