 2022 Preview 


       Winfield completed the 2021 season with a 12-1 record. The Pirates cruised through the regular season with a perfect 10-0 record going into the post season. Last year Winfield captured the region six title and a number one seed in the Class 3A playoffs. They finished region play with a 7-0 record. Winfield lost in the quarter-finals of the playoffs last season to a good Piedmont team by a score of 43-14.

       The Pirates won as many games as in any season since 2006.

       The high-scoring Winfield offense ranked 7th in the AHSAA. They averaged 43.3 points a game.

       The Pirates defense dominated most opponents as they ranked 13th in the AHSAA. The defense gave up just 9.8 points a game.

       Over the past two seasons the Pirates have gone 22-3 and will be looking to continue that winning tradition. Since 2010, Winfield has gone a combined 91-43. Their 67.9% winning percentage ranks 8th in Class 3A over the past twelve seasons.

       Over the past 25 seasons, Winfield has gone a combined 196-93. Their 68.0% winning percentage ranks 6th in Class 3A and 46th in the AHSAA. The Pirates have been successful on the football field with twenty-one winning seasons during this time.




       The Pirates are led by head coach David McKinney who is entering his tenth season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 74-29 over the past nine seasons at Winfield. Under his direction the Pirates have qualified for the playoffs a total of eight times. They have won four region crowns with Coach McKinney.

       Coach McKinney's overall record as a head football coach in fifteen season stands at 126-51 (71.2%). His 126 wins rank 42nd among active coaches in the AHSAA. Over the course of his career, Coach McKinney's teams have qualified for the playoffs a total of fourteen times and won six region championships.

       The Winfield Pirates will play in Class 3A region five during the 2022 season. Following realignment, the Pirates remain in 3A but move from region six over to region five.

       The Pirates enter the 2022 season riding a 18 game regular season winning streak. Winfield has won 7 consecutive region games. They have won 13 straight games on their home turf at Estes Hudson Stadium.

       The Pirates should be considered one of the favorites for the region five championship this season and a home game in the first round of the playoffs.

       The Pirates open the 2022 season on the road against non-region opponent Dora on Thursday, August 18 at Horace Roberts Field. Last year the Dora Bulldogs finished with an overall record of 6-5 and in fourth place in Class 4A region six. The Bulldogs lost in the first round of the Class 4A playoffs to Brooks by a score of 41-21.

       Winfield and Dora have met a total of 4 times on the football field. The Pirates have a 3-1-0 record against the Bulldogs. They last met in 2017 with Dora winning by a score of 17-6.
