2022 Preview | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Victory Christian finished the 2021 season with a disappointing 3-7 record. Last year Victory Christian just missed making the playoffs with a fifth place finish in Class 1A region five with a 2-4 region record. The Lions lost as many games as in any season since 2013. The offense struggled putting points on the score board as Victory Christian averaged scoring just 13.6 points a game. Since 2010, Victory Christian has gone a combined 40-80. Their 33.3% winning percentage ranks 40th in Class 1A over the past twelve seasons. Over the past 22 seasons, Victory Christian has managed to compile a record of 77-144. Their 35.0% winning percentage ranks 47th in Class 1A and 320th in the AHSAA. The Lions are led by head coach Bruce Breland who is entering his fourth season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 13-18 over the past three seasons at Victory Christian. Under his direction the Lions have qualified for the playoffs once. They have not won a region crown with Coach Breland. Coach Breland's overall record as a head football coach in twenty-two season stands at 101-127 (44.3%). His 101 wins rank 56th among active coaches in the AHSAA. Over the course of his career, Coach Breland's teams have qualified for the playoffs a total of ten times and won one region championship. Coach Breland won a state championship at Coosa Valley Academy in 1984. The Victory Christian Lions will play in Class 1A region six during the 2022 season. Following realignment, the Lions remain in 1A but move from region five over to region six. The Lions have one of the toughest schedules in Class 1A. Their opponents had a combined record of 61-53 last season. That ranks 7th in Class 1A and 117th in the AHSAA. With a little luck and some improvement, the Lions could find themselves challenging for one of the playoff spots for region six this season. Victory Christian missed the playoffs the past couple of seasons but hope to return to the post season in 2022. The Lions open the 2022 season at home against non-region opponent Woodland on Friday, August 19 at Richard Adams Stadium. Last year the Woodland Bobcats finished with an overall record of 5-8 and in fourth place in Class 1A region five. The Bobcats lost in the quarter-finals round of the Class 1A playoffs to Wadley by a score of 27-0. Victory Christian and Woodland have met a total of 7 times on the football field. The Lions have a 2-5-0 record against the Bobcats. They last met in 2021 with Woodland winning by a score of 14-6. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
