2023 Preview | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
St. James completed the 2022 season with a 13-2 record. Last year St. James captured the region three title and a number one seed in the Class 3A playoffs. They finished region play with a 6-0 record. The Trojans reeled off five straight playoff wins to claim the Class 3A State Championship by defeating Piedmont at the Alabama Super Seven 45-28 in Auburn. No team at St. James ever won more games in a season than the thirteen victories last year. The 542 points scored by the Trojans last year were a team record in a single season. Over the past two seasons the Trojans have Finished 23-4 and will be looking to continue that winning tradition. Since 2010, St. James has gone a combined 104-46. Their 69.3% winning percentage ranks 6th in Class 3A over the past thirteen seasons. Over the past 25 seasons, St. James has managed to compile a record of 176-106. Their 62.0% winning percentage ranks 14th in Class 3A and 77th in the AHSAA. The Trojans will be under the direction of new head football coach Neal Posey as they enter the 2023 season. Coach Posey was promoted from offensive coordinator to the head coaching job at St. James during the off season. Can Coach Posey repeat the most successful season in the schools history? It is more than possible as they return one of the best QBs in the state. The Trojans enter the 2023 season riding a 9 game winning streak. St. James has won 22 consecutive region games. They have won 6 straight games on their home turf at Carlisle Field. The Trojans enter the season with expectations of not only a region crown but will be contending for a trip to the state championship game. They are considered one the favorites in region three and should be a team in the thick of the hunt to represent the South in the Class 3A Super Seven come December. The Trojans have succeeded in reaching the playoffs every year since 2013 and this year should be no exception. QB KJ Jackson will be returning after completing 132 of 205 passes for 2,813 yards last season along with 42 touchdowns. Receiver Ziggy Holloway will return after catching 31 passes good for 739 yards and 14 TDs as a junior last season. The defense will be led by Junior Wils Johnson this season after collecting 167 total tackles last season. The Trojans open the 2023 season at home against non-region opponent Montgomery Academy on Friday, August 25 at Carlisle Field. Last year the Montgomery Academy Eagles finished with an overall record of 5-6 and in fourth place in Class 4A region two. The Eagles lost in the first round of the Class 4A playoffs to T.R. Miller by a score of 41-13. St. James and Montgomery Academy have met a total of 50 times on the football field. The Trojans have a 21-29-0 record against the Eagles. They last met in 2022 with St. James winning by a score of 42-14. The Trojans lost a ton of talent to graduation off the 2022 squad. Replacing these players will be a key to another successful season. St. James lost 3A All-State receiver Ethan Beard to graduation. He was named to the first team last season. Also graduating were teammates offensive lineman Jake Streeton, athlete Cosner Harrison, athlete Ziggy Holloway and athlete Tucker Williams. The Trojans return 3A All-State Senior punter Braxton Berrey. He was named to the first team last season. The Trojans also return Senior quarterback KJ Jackson. He was named to the second team. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
