 2023 Preview 


       Cordova completed the 2022 season with a 5-5 record. Last year Cordova just missed making the playoffs with a fifth place finish in Class 4A region five with a 3-4 region record.

       The Blue Devils improved in 2022 with their first winning season since 2016. The Blue Devils had some tough luck last season as four of their five losses were by less than eight points.

       Since 2010, Cordova has gone a combined 72-73. Their 49.7% winning percentage ranks 30th in Class 4A over the past thirteen seasons.

       Over the past 25 seasons, Cordova has managed to compile a record of 151-134. Their 53.0% winning percentage ranks 23rd in Class 4A and 161st in the AHSAA.




       The Blue Devils are led by head coach Shane Smothers who is entering his third season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 8-12 over the past two seasons at Cordova. The Blue Devils have yet to reach the playoffs under his direction. They have not won a region crown with Coach Smothers. Over the course of his career, Coach Smothers' teams have qualified for the playoffs a total of six times and won two region championships.

       The Blue Devils could find themselves challenging for one of the playoff spots for region five this season with a few breaks and a little improvement. Cordova has failed to qualify for the playoffs since 2019 but hope to return to the post season this year.

      David Odom will be back this season at running back after rushing for 1,153 yards in 2022.

       The Blue Devils open the 2023 season on the road against non-region opponent Fayette County on Thursday, August 24 at John Morgan Brown Stadium. Last year the Fayette County Tigers finished with an overall record of 8-3 and in third place in Class 3A region five. The Tigers lost in the first round of the Class 3A playoffs to Sylvania by a score of 35-6.

       Cordova and Fayette County have met a total of 12 times on the football field. The Blue Devils have a 2-10-0 record against the Tigers. They last met in 2022 with Fayette County winning by a score of 28-24.

      

       The Blue Devils return 4A All-State Junior offensive lineman Cade Channell. He was named to the second team last season.
