 2023 Preview 


       G.W. Long completed the 2022 season with a 8-4 record. With their 6-1 region record and a second place finish in Class 2A region two, the Rebels earned a spot in the playoffs in 2022. G.W. Long reached the second round of the playoffs before falling to Reeltown by a score of 55-0.

       Since 2010, G.W. Long has gone a combined 107-41. Their 72.3% winning percentage ranks 2nd in Class 2A over the past thirteen seasons.

       Over the past 25 seasons, G.W. Long has managed to compile a record of 177-103. Their 63.0% winning percentage ranks 7th in Class 2A and 72nd in the AHSAA.




       The Rebels are led by head coach David Watts who is entering his third season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 16-6 over the past two seasons at G.W. Long. Under his direction the Rebels have qualified for the playoffs a total of two times. They have not won a region crown with Coach Watts. Over the course of his career, Coach Watts' teams have qualified for the playoffs a total of two times .

       A proven quarterback returning to the starting lineup in 2023 could lead the Rebels to an even better season this fall.

       The Rebels should be in contention for a playoff spot in region two this season. Hosting a first round playoff game on their home turf would be an advantage.

      QB Bryson Hughes will be returning after completing 180 of 312 passes for 2,732 yards last season along with 16 touchdowns.

      The defense will be led by Brayden Whitehead this season after collecting 94 total tackles last season.

       The Rebels open the 2023 season on the road against non-region opponent Slocomb on Friday, September 1 at Red Top Stadium. Last year the Slocomb Red Tops finished with an overall record of 5-5 and in fifth place in Class 4A region two. The Red Tops ended last season on a positive note with a win over Geneva County by a score of 48-8 after failing to gain a playoff spot.

       G.W. Long and Slocomb have met a total of 6 times on the football field. The Rebels have a 3-3-0 record against the Red Tops. They last met in 2022 with G.W. Long winning by a score of 22-15.

       G.W. Long lost 2A All-State  kicker Tanner Patton to graduation. He was named to the second team last season. Also graduating were teammates defensive lineman Austin Kerchner and athlete Bryson Hughes.

       The Rebels return 2A All-State Senior defensive back Brayden Whitehead. He was named to the second team last season.
