2023 Preview | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Sand Rock completed the 2022 season with a 4-6 record. Last year Sand Rock just missed making the playoffs with a fifth place finish in Class 2A region seven with a 3-4 region record. The defense allowed a team record 319 points last season. Since 2010, Sand Rock has gone a combined 74-64. Their 53.6% winning percentage ranks 19th in Class 2A over the past thirteen seasons. Over the past 25 seasons, Sand Rock has managed to compile a record of 154-117. Their 57.0% winning percentage ranks 10th in Class 2A and 118th in the AHSAA. The Wildcats are led by head coach Alan Heath who is entering his fourth season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 14-17 over the past three seasons at Sand Rock. Under his direction the Wildcats have qualified for the playoffs once. They have not won a region crown with Coach Heath. Injuries hurt the Wildcats in 2022 stalling the rebuilding process for Coach Heath. The Wildcats have one of the toughest overall schedules in Class 2A. Their opponents had a combined record of 67-48 last season. That ranks 4th in Class 2A and 33rd in the AHSAA. The Wildcats could find themselves challenging for one of the playoff spots for region seven this season with a few breaks and a little improvement. Sand Rock came up short of the playoffs last year but are optimistic of a return to the post season this year. The Wildcats open the 2023 season at home against non-region opponent Spring Garden on Friday, August 25 at Russell Jacoway Stadium. Last year the Spring Garden Panthers finished with an overall record of 10-2 and in first place in Class 1A region six. The Panthers lost in the second round of the Class 1A playoffs to Coosa Christian by a score of 31-28. Sand Rock and Spring Garden have met a total of 36 times on the football field. The Wildcats have a 24-12-0 record against the Panthers. They last met in 2022 with Spring Garden winning by a score of 40-8. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
