 2023 Preview

Sheffield completed the 2022 season with a 5-5 record. Last year Sheffield just missed making the playoffs with a fifth place finish in Class 2A region eight with a 2-4 region record.

Sheffield had a very good offense last year, scoring 38.2 points per game, but it couldn't keep up with a defense that gave up 36.9 points per game.

Since 2010, Sheffield has gone a combined 66-75. Their 46.8% winning percentage ranks 31st in Class 2A over the past thirteen seasons.

Over the past 25 seasons, Sheffield has managed to compile a record of 132-139. Their 49.0% winning percentage ranks 25th in Class 2A and 204th in the AHSAA.

The Bulldogs are led by head coach Brian Dickerson who is entering his second season at the helm. His team finished with a 5-5 record in his first season at Sheffield. The Bulldogs saw improvement from a 2-8 record the season before coach Dickerson arrived. The Bulldogs have yet to reach the playoffs under his direction. They have not won a region crown with Coach Dickerson.

The Bulldogs could find themselves challenging for one of the playoff spots for region eight this season with a few breaks and a little improvement. Sheffield has failed to qualify for the playoffs since 2019 but hope to return to the post season this year.

The Bulldogs open the 2023 season at home against non-region opponent Elkmont on Thursday, August 24 at Walton R. Wright Stadium. Last year the Elkmont Red Devils finished with an overall record of 1-9 and in seventh place in Class 3A region eight. The Red Devils closed out the regular season with a loss to St. John Paul II by a score of 42-14.

Sheffield and Elkmont have met a total of 15 times on the football field. The Bulldogs have a 11-4-0 record against the Red Devils. They last met in 2022 with Sheffield winning by a score of 47-20.

The Bulldogs return 2A All-State Senior athlete Calvin Madden. He was named to the honorable mention team last season.
