2023 Preview | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
St. Clair County finished the 2022 season with a disappointing 0-10 record. Last year St. Clair County finished seventh in Class 5A region six with a 0-6 region record and failed to qualify for the playoffs. St. Clair County was inconsistent offensively last year and they need some improvement if the Fighting Saints want to be competitive. They only averaged 16.3 points a game. St. Clair County struggled on the defensive side of the football last year. The defense found little success in stopping opposing offenses as they gave up an average of 40.6 points a game. The Fighting Saints would prefer to forget the past two seasons as they have finished with a 0-20 record. Since 2010, St. Clair County has gone a combined 44-93. Their 32.1% winning percentage ranks 44th in Class 5A over the past thirteen seasons. Over the past 25 seasons, St. Clair County has managed to compile a record of 120-147. Their 45.0% winning percentage ranks 32nd in Class 5A and 237th in the AHSAA. The Fighting Saints will be under the direction of new head football coach Tyler Robinson as they enter the 2023 season. Coach Robinson spent the last four years serving as an assistant coach at Huntingdon. Before that, Robinson was at Birmingham Southern in 2018 and was a graduate assistant at Jacksonville State from 2015-17. The Fighting Saints have their sixth head coach since 2013 after going 0-10 the last two seasons. The Fighting Saints enter the 2023 season in the middle of a 24 game losing streak. They would like nothing better than to end the string of losses early in the season. This season, the Fighting Saints will be a long shot for one of the four playoff spots in region six. After not winning a single game last year, the goal at St. Clair County will be to simply win some games. The Fighting Saints open the 2023 season at home against non-region opponent Ashville on Friday, August 25 at St. Clair Stadium. Last year the Ashville Bulldogs finished with an overall record of 2-8 and in sixth place in Class 4A region six. The Bulldogs closed out the regular season with a loss to Munford by a score of 24-9. St. Clair County and Ashville have met a total of 49 times on the football field. The Fighting Saints have a 21-28-0 record against the Bulldogs. They last met in 2022 with Ashville winning by a score of 26-21. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
