2023 Preview | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Wetumpka completed the 2022 season with a 7-4 record. With their 4-2 region record and a third place finish in Class 6A region two, the Indians earned a spot in the playoffs in 2022. Wetumpka's season came to an end in the first round of the playoffs when they fell to Saraland by a score of 48-14. Since 2010, Wetumpka has gone a combined 88-61. Their 59.1% winning percentage ranks 23rd in Class 6A over the past thirteen seasons. Over the past 25 seasons, Wetumpka has managed to compile a record of 169-113. Their 60.0% winning percentage ranks 19th in Class 6A and 90th in the AHSAA. The Indians are led by head coach Bear Woods who is entering his second season at the helm. His team finished with a 7-4 record in his first season at Wetumpka. The Indians saw improvement from a 5-6 record the season before coach Woods arrived. Under his direction the Indians have qualified for the playoffs once. They have not won a region crown with Coach Woods. The Indians should be in contention for a playoff spot in region two this season. Hosting a first round playoff game on their home turf would be an advantage. They have reached the playoffs every year since 2012 and will once again be in the hunt for a spot in 2023. QB Nate Rogers will be returning after completing 102 of 208 passes for 1,378 yards last season along with 10 touchdowns. Rogers also added another 1,172 yards rushing in 2022. The Indians open the 2023 season on the road against non-region opponent Benjamin Russell on Friday, August 25 at Martin-Savarese Stadium. Last year the Benjamin Russell Wildcats finished with an overall record of 8-3 and in third place in Class 6A region three. The Wildcats lost in the first round of the Class 6A playoffs to Hueytown by a score of 56-28. Wetumpka and Benjamin Russell have met a total of 46 times on the football field. The Indians have a 19-26-1 record against the Wildcats. They last met in 2021 with Wetumpka winning by a score of 28-7. Wetumpka lost 6A All-State kicker Logan Weighall to graduation. He was named to the second team last season. Also graduating was teammate linebacker Justin Crumbaugh. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
