2023 Preview | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Winfield completed the 2022 season with a 9-2 record. With their 5-1 region record and a second place finish in Class 3A region five, the Pirates earned a spot in the playoffs in 2022. Winfield's season came to an end in the first round of the playoffs when they fell to Geraldine by a score of 24-8. The defense was very stingy last season as Winfield ranked 23rd in the AHSAA. The defense allowed only 13.5 points a game. Over the past two seasons the Pirates have Finished 21-3 and will be looking to continue that winning tradition. Since 2010, Winfield has gone a combined 100-45. Their 69.0% winning percentage ranks 7th in Class 3A over the past thirteen seasons. Over the past 25 seasons, Winfield has finished a combined 201-88. Their 70.0% winning percentage ranks 5th in Class 3A and 37th in the AHSAA. The Pirates have been successful on the football field with twenty-two winning seasons during this time. The Pirates are led by head coach David McKinney who is entering his eleventh season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 83-31 over the past ten seasons at Winfield. Under his direction the Pirates have qualified for the playoffs a total of nine times. They have won four region crowns with Coach McKinney. His 135 wins rank 41st among active coaches in the AHSAA. Over the course of his career, Coach McKinney's teams have qualified for the playoffs a total of fifteen times and won six region championships. The Pirates enter the 2023 season riding a 7 game regular season winning streak. While most teams rebuild during the off season, Winfield has been a consistent winner the past few years and will simply reload this season. The Pirates should be in contention for a playoff spot in region five this season. Hosting a first round playoff game on their home turf would be an advantage. The Pirates open the 2023 season at home against non-region opponent Dora on Thursday, August 24 at Estes Hudson Stadium. Last year the Dora Bulldogs finished with an overall record of 8-4 and in first place in Class 4A region five. The Bulldogs lost in the second round of the Class 4A playoffs to Randolph by a score of 47-37. Winfield and Dora have met a total of 4 times on the football field. The Pirates have a 3-1-0 record against the Bulldogs. They last met in 2022 with Winfield winning by a score of 28-22. Winfield lost 3A All-State athlete Drew Cook to graduation. He was named to the first team last season. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
