Percy Julian completed the 2023 season with a 5-5 record. Last year Percy Julian finished sixth in Class 7A region two with a 3-5 region record and failed to qualify for the playoffs. Since 2010, Percy Julian has gone a combined 65-82. Their 44.2% winning percentage ranks 38th in Class 6A over the past fourteen seasons. Over the past 25 seasons, Percy Julian has managed to compile a record of 110-159. Their 41.0% winning percentage ranks 41st in Class 6A and 263rd in the AHSAA. Coaching Change: DreQuay Everett stepped down from his duties as head football coach at Percy Julian in November after just two seasons. His teams went 6-14 with neither reaching the playoffs. The once proud football program of Robert E. Lee has struggled over the past couple of decades to maintain a winning style and has only gotten past the second round of the playoffs once since 1999. A new name for the school may not prove enough to return them to the powerhouse they once were in the 1950-1990 seasons in Montgomery. 2024 Head Coach: Kenneth White will lead the Pheonix in the fall at Percy Julian. This will be his first head coaching job. He has hopes of rebuilding the once storied football program. The team will be moving from 7A to 6A so the going may be a little easier for the Pheonix in 2024. Season Outlook: The Percy Julian Phoenix will play in Class 6A region two during the 2024 season. The Phoenix may find the schedule slightly easier this season with the move down in classification from Class 7A to 6A. They will compete in region two this year. The Phoenix are looking forward to the move from 7A down to 6A this season. They move from one of the toughest regions in the state to one where only two of the schools even qualified for the playoffs last year (Pike Road and Wetumpka). The possibility of grabbing one of the four playoff spots for region two will be much easier in 6A than it was the last few years in 7A. Percy Julian has missed the playoffs the past two seasons so the first goal of this team should be to get back to the playoffs after falling short the past two years. The five wins last year were an improvement over the 1-9 season in 2022. Returning quarterback Bryson McGrew will be counted on to lead the offense once again. The Phoenix could find themselves challenging for one of the playoff spots for region two this season with a few breaks and a little improvement. Percy Julian missed the playoffs the past couple of seasons but hope to return to the post season in 2024. Players to Watch in 2024: QB Bryson McGrew threw for 1,849 yards by completing 208-of-289 passes and 15 touchdowns last season. He also ran for another 655 yards and sored 10 touchdowns. Season Opener: The Phoenix open the 2024 season on the road against non-region opponent Paul Bryant on Friday, August 23 at Stampede Stadium. Last year the Paul Bryant Stampede finished with an overall record of 3-7 and in sixth place in Class 6A region four. The Stampede closed out the regular season with a loss to Demopolis by a score of 43-21. Percy Julian and Paul Bryant have met a total of 2 times on the football field. The Phoenix have a 2-0-0 record against the Stampede. They last met in 2003 with Percy Julian winning by a score of 31-20. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
