2024 Preview | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
West Point completed the 2023 season with a 5-6 record. With their 2-4 region record and a fourth place finish in Class 5A region eight, the Warriors earned a spot in the playoffs in 2023. West Point's season came to an end in the first round of the playoffs when they fell to Ramsay by a score of 50-0. It marked the first time since the 2020 season that the Warriors qualified for the playoffs. The Warriors last playoff victory came during the 1994 season. They would love to break through this year with a post season win. Since 2010, West Point has gone a combined 64-82. Their 43.8% winning percentage ranks 33rd in Class 5A over the past fourteen seasons. Over the past 25 seasons, West Point has managed to compile a record of 111-149. Their 43.0% winning percentage ranks 41st in Class 5A and 273rd in the AHSAA. Coaching Change: Don Farley ended his tenure at Tanner after eleven seasons at the helm of the Warriors football program. His teams finished a combined 54-62 with six playoff appearances. They failed to win any of the playoff games. He leaves as the winningest coach ever at the school that has not found great success since first playing football back in 1964. 2024 Head Coach: Kevin McCravy was the QB Coach and Offensive Coordinator for the 2023 season at Russellville. Previously he was at Decatur High School where he spent twelve years, the last five as the Offensive Coordinator for the Red Raiders. This will be his first job as a head football coach. Season Outlook: The West Point Warriors will play in Class 5A region seven during the 2024 season. Following realignment, the Warriors remain in 5A but move from region eight over to region seven. With the addition of Priceville in Region 7 the field of playoff contenders just got a little larger in 2024. Can the Warriors hang on and grab one of the elusive four spots available? The Warriors will welcome back six starters from the 2023 football season to the offense and four on defense. Coach McCrary is optimistic about the Warriors in 2024. ''Good core of returning starters, and role players who have stepped into starting positions.'' The Warriors could find themselves challenging for one of the playoff spots for region seven this season with a few breaks and a little improvement. Returning Starters: OFFENSE: Hunter Hensley, Brayden Monfort, Noah Bryan, Nick Lee, Mikhail Dujoud, Blayne Jones DEFENSE: Sylar Philyaw, Connor Crawford, Noah Laney, Chance Aldridge NEWCOMERS: WR Bryant Moon, RB Ollie Howell, LB Titan Thornton, DB Christopher Skipper, DB Cooper Howard, ATH Ayden Ennis Season Opener: The Warriors open the 2024 season at home against non-region opponent Haleyville on Friday, August 23 at Warrior Field. Last year the Haleyville Lions finished with an overall record of 8-4 and in second place in Class 4A region five. The Lions lost in the second round of the Class 4A playoffs to Cherokee County by a score of 49-14. West Point and Haleyville have met a total of 9 times on the football field. The Warriors have a 1-8-0 record against the Lions. They last met in 2009 with Haleyville winning by a score of 19-6. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
