 2024 Preview 


       Winston County completed the 2023 season with a 5-5 record. Last year Winston County just missed making the playoffs with a fifth place finish in Class 2A region five with a 2-4 region record.

       The Yellow Jackets had some tough luck last season as three of their five losses were by less than eight points.

       Since 2010, Winston County has gone a combined 60-88. Their 40.5% winning percentage ranks 39th in Class 2A over the past fourteen seasons.

       Over the past 25 seasons, Winston County has managed to compile a record of 114-154. Their 42.0% winning percentage ranks 37th in Class 2A and 253rd in the AHSAA.

Head Coach:
       The Yellow Jackets are led by head coach Caleb Simmons who is entering his second season at the helm. His team finished with a 5-5 record in his first season at Winston County. The Yellow Jackets have yet to reach the playoffs under his direction. They have not won a region crown with Coach Simmons.

Season Outlook:

       The Winston County Yellow Jackets will play in Class 2A region eight during the 2024 season. Following realignment, the Yellow Jackets remain in 2A but move from region five over to region eight.

      

       The Yellow Jackets came within one victory last season of making the playoffs but fell just short. They will be working hard over the summer to improve on the 5-5 record and get back to the post season.

       The Jackets will return seven starters from last year's team on offense and seven to the defense. Several players will be expected to play both ways again as most 1A-2A schools find necessary. The offense does have Landon Kelley back at quarterback and RaKim Moore at running back so that is a great starting point for the offense that scored 309 points in ten games last season.

    The Yellow Jackets could find themselves challenging for one of the playoff spots for region eight this season with a few breaks and a little improvement. Winston County came up short of the playoffs last year but are optimistic of a return to the post season this year.

Players to Watch in 2024:
      QB Landon Kelley will be returning for his senior season after completing 44-of-79 passes for 877 yards and 7 TDs last season. Kelly also ran for another 836 yards and 14 touchdowns.

      RB RaKim Moore will also be back after rushing for 1,063 yards and 9 TDs last season.

Season Opener:
       The Yellow Jackets open the 2024 season at home against non-region opponent Addison on Friday, August 23 at Malcolm Blake Stadium. Last year the Addison Bulldogs finished with an overall record of 8-3 and in second place in Class 1A region eight. The Bulldogs lost in the first round of the Class 1A playoffs to Pickens County by a score of 32-20.

       Winston County and Addison have met a total of 87 times on the football field. The Yellow Jackets have a 36-50-1 record against the Bulldogs. They last met in 2023 with Winston County winning by a score of 14-0.
