Carroll completed the 2023 season with a 4-7 record. With their 3-2 region record and a fourth place finish in Class 5A region two, the Eagles earned a spot in the playoffs in 2023. Carroll's season came to an end in the first round of the playoffs when they fell to Demopolis by a score of 31-28. The defense allowed a team record 405 points last season. The Eagles had some tough luck last season as four of their seven losses were by less than eight points. Carroll had a very good offense last year, scoring 32.4 points per game, but it couldn't keep up with a defense that gave up 36.8 points per game. Since 2010, Carroll has gone a combined 66-81. Their 44.9% winning percentage ranks 31st in Class 5A over the past fourteen seasons. Over the past 25 seasons, Carroll has managed to compile a record of 110-151. Their 42.0% winning percentage ranks 37th in Class 5A and 258th in the AHSAA. Graduated All-State Players: Carroll lost 5A All-State athlete Lakeith Person to graduation. He was named to the honorable mention team last season. Coaching Change: Patrick Plott resigned from his head coaching position at Carroll after leading the program for the past four seasons at the helm. His teams finished a combined 16-27 but did qualify for the playoffs each season before losing in the first round. Coach Plott has an overall record of 102-54 in thirteen seasons as a head coach. His 2013 squad at Pickens County went a perfect 15-0 and won the Class 1A state championship. He has also had stops at Aliceville, Bullock County and Greenville. His teams have won five region championships. 2024 Head Coach: Matt Mellown was the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at four different schools, the last four at Andalusia High School. Mellown was a standout football player at Andalusia High School in 2004-06 under Tom Causey and Brian Seymore, graduating in 2007. He attended Troy University before transferring to Alabama and completing his degree. He was the offensive coordinator and quarterback coach at Mary Montgomery, Demopolis and Prattville before returning to Andalusia in 2020. Season Outlook: The Carroll Eagles will play in Class 5A region two during the 2024 season. The Eagles have one of the toughest overall schedules in Class 5A. Their opponents had a combined record of 73-42 last season. That ranks 4th in Class 5A and 14th in the AHSAA. Carroll will face six opponents that reached the playoffs last season. The Eagles lost staring quarterback Keyshawn Cole to graduation and the 1,449 yards and 23 touchdowns he threw for last season. They also will feel the loss of all-purpose player Peyton Plott and his nearly 2,000 yards of total offense when he transferred to Auburn over the summer. A lot of other talent graduated over the summer so finding replacements for those starters will be the first goal for first year head coach Matt Mellown. The Eagles return four starters on each side of the football in 2024. He did tell us one player to watch for this year will be Jacarri Hammock. With the AHSAA realignment region 2 is crowded with six teams that qualified for the playoffs last year. This will make it difficult for a couple of the teams to grab one of the four spots come November. The Eagles could find themselves challenging for one of the playoff spots for region two this season with a few breaks and a little improvement. Unfortunately, Carroll plays in a region with the likes of Catholic Montgomery, Eufaula, Andalusia and Headland making it more difficult to claim one of the four playoff spots. The Eagles will need to find a way to upset one of those teams to have any chance at the post season. Returning Starters: MLB Quay White, OLB Deondre Mcclendon Season Opener: The Eagles open the 2024 season on the road against non-region opponent Russell County on Friday, August 23 at Corbett-Mitchell Stadium. Last year the Russell County Warriors finished with an overall record of 2-8 and in sixth place in Class 6A region two. The Warriors ended last season on a positive note with a win over Greenville by a score of 75-43 after failing to gain a playoff spot. Carroll and Russell County have met a total of 21 times on the football field. The Eagles have a 15-6-0 record against the Warriors.
