2024 Preview | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Loachapoka completed the 2023 season with a 10-1 record. The Indians cruised through the regular season with a perfect 9-0 record going into the post season. Last year Loachapoka captured the region four title and a number one seed in the Class 1A playoffs. They finished region play with a 7-0 record. It was the first region championship for the Indians since the 2013 season. Loachapoka reached the second round of the playoffs before falling to Brantley by a score of 14-12. The Indians won as many games as in any season since 2013. The defense was very stingy last season as Loachapoka ranked 10th in the AHSAA. The defense allowed only 9.8 points a game. Since 2010, Loachapoka has gone a combined 77-73. Their 51.3% winning percentage ranks 26th in Class 2A over the past fourteen seasons. Over the past 25 seasons, Loachapoka has managed to compile a record of 165-114. Their 59.0% winning percentage ranks 10th in Class 2A and 95th in the AHSAA. Graduated All-State Players: Loachapoka lost 1A All-State defensive lineman Jamari Payne to graduation. He was named to the first team last season. Also graduating was teammate running back Jeremiah Darlington. Coaching Change: Frederick Newton stepped down as the head football coach at Loachapoka after being elected to the Chambers County School Board in March. After more than 20 years as a coach and teacher he will try his hand at politics. 2024 Head Coach: Branden Hall graduated from Auburn High School in 2000 and has a B.S. from Troy University in Sports and Fitness Management. He has been teaching at Auburn Junior High and Coached the defensive line at Auburn High the last three seasons. Previously he was an assistant coach at Russell County for two year and the DL coach at Central Phenix City for another six years (2013-2018). Season Outlook: The Loachapoka Indians will play in Class 2A region four during the 2024 season. The Indians move up in classification to Class 2A. They may find the going slightly tougher with the move. The Indians enter the 2024 season riding a 10 game regular season winning streak. Loachapoka has won 8 consecutive region games. They have won 13 straight games on their home turf at Loachapoka Stadium. The Indians will be without the service of running back Jeremiah Darlington who graduated in the spring. Can the Indians build on last seasons 10-1 record even with the move up to 2A? They return a good groups of starters from last year so the odds may be pretty good. Region 4 is not the strength of 2A with only Reeltown making the playoffs last year. So look for Loachapoka to be in the mix for a playoff spot and maybe hosting a playoff game in 2024. The Indians should be in contention for a playoff spot in region four this season. Hosting a first round playoff game on their home turf would be an advantage. Players to Watch in 2024: QB Quinjavis Nelms will be returning for his senior season after completing 51-of-111 passes for 719 yards and 8 TDs last season. Returning Starters: RB/ILB Anthony Wheat, DB/WR J.K. Walker, FB JaMichael Morris, DB/WR Roderick Nelms, DE/WR JaDarion Satterwhite, DL/OL Jaylen Hart, ILB Javion Gary, LB/TE Mitchell Chenier Season Opener: The Indians open the 2024 season at home against non-region opponent Notasulga on Saturday, August 24 at Loachapoka Stadium. Last year the Notasulga Blue Devils finished with an overall record of 5-5 and in third place in Class 1A region four. The Blue Devils lost in the first round of the Class 1A playoffs to Millry by a score of 55-0. Loachapoka and Notasulga have met a total of 50 times on the football field. The Indians have a 16-34-0 record against the Blue Devils. They last met in 2023 with Loachapoka winning by a score of 12-6. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
