 2024 Preview

Straughn completed the 2023 season with a 10-2 record. Last year Straughn captured the region two title and a number one seed in the Class 3A playoffs. They finished region play with a 8-0 record. It was the first region championship for the Tigers since the 2009 season. Straughn reached the second round of the playoffs before falling to Thomasville by a score of 33-21.

The Tigers won as many games as in any season since 2014. The 428 points scored by the Tigers last year were a team record in a single season.

Since 2010, Straughn has gone a combined 87-68. Their 56.1% winning percentage ranks 20th in Class 4A over the past fourteen seasons.

Over the past 25 seasons, Straughn has managed to compile a record of 165-117. Their 58.0% winning percentage ranks 20th in Class 4A and 99th in the AHSAA.

Graduated All-State Players:
Straughn lost 3A All-State  defensive back Parker Black to graduation. He was named to the first team last season.

Coaching Change:
Ashley Kilcrease  leaves Straughn after just three seasons with a record of 24-10 and three playoff appearances. His last team was his best as the Tigers finished the season with a 10-2 record before losing in the second round of the playoffs. His overall record at Brantley and Straughn stands at 72-26 with 10 playoff victories in eight seasons as a head football coach.

2024 Head Coach:
Garrett Windham  was first team all-state at Straughn High School prior to his graduation in 2004. He also played football at Chattanooga where he was named Second Team All-SoCon by the leagues coaches his senior season.

Windham returns to Straughn as the head football coach after serving as an assistant coach at Andalusia High School.

Season Outlook:

The Straughn Tigers will play in Class 4A region two during the 2024 season. The Tigers move up in classification to Class 4A. They may find the going slightly tougher with the move.

The Tigers enter the 2024 season riding a 5 game regular season winning streak.

The Tigers have qualified for the playoffs the past three seasons after a four year drought in post season games. Last year's 10-2 record was great and the fans hope that winning will continue in 2024.

Straughn will return five starters to the offense and eight on defense so this will be an experienced group of players this year. There will also be a few newcomers Coach Windham will count on the contribute early in the season.

Coach Windham said ''The Tigers move into 4A Region 2, after competing in 3A in 2023. The Offense looks to replace all 5 starting OL, but have a big, talented group coming up that should pick up right where the 2023 Region Champion team left off. Defensively, majority of the starters under Defensive Coordinator David Lowery's tutelage return. So, the expectation for both Defense and Special Teams is high. The Tigers play a tough non-region schedule that includes two back-to-back road games with Highland Home and TR Miller, and a home game vs Goshen to close out the regular season. ''

The Tigers are considered one of the favorites for the region two championship this season and a home game in the first round of the playoffs.

Returning Starters:
OFFENSE: RB Charlie Jordan, WR Jeremiah Toole, WR Mack McIntyre, TE Clark Jordan, TE Clark Gay
DEFENSE: LB Drew Ferguson, LB Mack McIntyre, LB Saxby Radford, DB Cameron Adams, DE Clark Gay, DE Clark Jordan, DB Charlie Jordan, DB Kolton Cauley, DB Jeremiah Toole, DL TD Woods
NEWCOMERS: Jr Brenden Bartholomew, So Brayden Gunter, Fr Eli Grissett, Fr Tate Watson WR Clark Jordan, MLB Drew Ferguson, RB/LB Charlie Jordan

Season Opener:
The Tigers open the 2024 season on the road against non-region opponent Highland Home on Friday, August 23 at Clay Stadium. Last year the Highland Home Flying Squadron finished with an overall record of 10-2 and in second place in Class 2A region three. The Flying Squadron lost in the second round of the Class 2A playoffs to B.B. Comer by a score of 21-14.

Straughn and Highland Home have met a total of 14 times on the football field. The Tigers have a 9-5-0 record against the Flying Squadron. They last met in 2001 with Straughn winning by a score of 14-7.
