Southern Choctaw completed the 2016 season with a 10-2 record. Last year Southern Choctaw captured the region one title and a number one seed in the Class 2A playoffs. They finished region play with a 5-1 record. It was the first region championship for the Indians since the 2005 season. Southern Choctaw lost in the quarter-finals of the playoffs last season to a good G.W. Long team by a score of 42-14. The Indians won as many games as in any season since 2005. It marked the first time since the 2012 season that the Indians qualified for the playoffs. The Indians hope to continue the success they had last season. Coach Noland saw improvement as they won ten games following a 2-8 record in 2015. Since 2010, Southern Choctaw has gone a combined 44-32. Their 58.0% winning percentage ranks 16th in Class 2A over the past seven seasons. Over the past 25 seasons, Southern Choctaw has managed to compile a record of 193-107. Their 64.0% winning percentage ranks 8th in Class 2A and 65th in the AHSAA. The Indians are led by head coach Jeremy Noland who is entering his ninth season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 48-38 over the past eight seasons at Southern Choctaw. Under his direction the Indians have qualified for the playoffs a total of four times. They have won one region crown with Coach Noland. Coach Noland's overall record as a head football coach in eight season stands at 48-38 (55.8%). The Southern Choctaw Indians will play in Class 2A region one during the 2017 season. The Indians enter the 2017 season riding a 6 game regular season winning streak. The Indians should be considered one of the favorites for the region one championship this season and a home game in the first round of the playoffs. Junior Deontae McGrewreturns after rushing for 1,290 yards on 172 carries and scoring 15 touchdowns. Junior Jajuan Tavarez also returns after rushing for 534 yards on 64 carries and scoring 4 touchdowns. Junior Javanta Foster also returns after rushing for 809 yards on 93 carries and scoring 12 TDs. Senior Jordan Pope also will be back after rushing for 655 yards on 76 carries and scoring 10 TDs The defense returns Senior defensive end Kavonte Howard who got in on 76 tackles and 6 sacks along with Senior linebacker Alex Lockhart who collected 3 interceptions last year. The Indians open the 2017 season at home against non-region opponent Excel on Friday, September 1 at The Reservation. Last year the Excel Panthers finished with an overall record of 1-9 and in eighth place in Class 3A region one. The Panthers closed out the regular season with a loss to Monroe County by a score of 26-12. Southern Choctaw and Excel have met a total of 15 times on the football field. The Indians have a 9-6-0 record against the Panthers.
