2022 Preview | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Pike County finished the 2021 season with a disappointing 0-9 record. Last year Pike County finished eighth in Class 3A region four with a 0-7 region record and failed to qualify for the playoffs. Pike County took a step backwards last year with their first losing season since 2012. The Bulldogs lost as many games as in any season since 1997. The defense allowed a team record 368 points last season. The Bulldogs hope to rebound after a down year. Last season they did not win a game which followed a 6-5 record in 2020. The offense struggled putting points on the score board as Pike County averaged scoring just 8.6 points a game. The Bulldogs also struggled on the defensive side of the football as they found little success in stopping opposing offenses and allowed an average of 40.9 points a game. Since 2010, Pike County has gone a combined 75-55. Their 57.7% winning percentage ranks 23rd in Class 3A over the past twelve seasons. Over the past 25 seasons, Pike County has managed to compile a record of 191-100. Their 66.0% winning percentage ranks 9th in Class 3A and 61st in the AHSAA. The Bulldogs will be under the direction of new head football coach Mark Hurt as they enter the 2022 season. Coach Hurt was the defensive coordinator at Lowndes County High School in Georgia last season. Coach Hurt's overall record as a head football coach in thirteen season stands at 51-79 (39.2%). Over the course of his career, Coach Hurt's teams have qualified for the playoffs a total of three times and won one region championship. The Pike County Bulldogs will play in Class 3A region two during the 2022 season. Following realignment, the Bulldogs remain in 3A but move from region four over to region two. Overall, the region is among the weakest in the state. Qualifying for one of the playoffs spots could be a little easier. The Bulldogs enter the 2022 season in the middle of a 10 game losing streak. They would like nothing better than to end the string of losses early in the season. It will be an uphill battle for the Bulldogs if they hope to grab one of the four playoff slots in region two this season. The Bulldogs open the 2022 season at home against non-region opponent Charles Henderson on Friday, August 19 at Bulldog Stadium. Last year the Charles Henderson Trojans finished with an overall record of 2-8 and in fifth place in Class 5A region two. The Trojans closed out the regular season with a loss to Brantley by a score of 29-15. Pike County and Charles Henderson have met a total of 41 times on the football field. The Bulldogs have a 12-29-0 record against the Trojans. They last met in 1999 with Pike County winning by a score of 14-12. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
