 2024 Preview 


       Cleburne County completed the 2023 season with a 4-7 record. With their 2-4 region record and a fourth place finish in Class 4A region four, the Tigers earned a spot in the playoffs in 2023. Cleburne County's season came to an end in the first round of the playoffs when they fell to Jackson by a score of 44-7.

       It marked the first time since the 2015 season that the Tigers qualified for the playoffs.

       Cleburne County struggled on the defensive side of the football last year. The defense found little success in stopping opposing offenses as they gave up an average of 36.3 points a game.

       Since 2010, Cleburne County has gone a combined 66-85. Their 43.7% winning percentage ranks 43rd in Class 4A over the past fourteen seasons.

       Over the past 25 seasons, Cleburne County has managed to compile a record of 158-122. Their 56.0% winning percentage ranks 25th in Class 4A and 138th in the AHSAA.

Coaching Change:
     Joby Burns  leaves Cleburne County after five seasons where his teams posted a 16-35 record and one playoff appearance.

2024 Head Coach:
    Vaughn Lee  spent his first seven years of his coaching career at Pleasant Valley, Eufaula High, and Hewitt Trussville before becoming the offensive coordinator and head baseball coach at Cleburne County High School in 1998. Over the next 20 seasons his baseball teams amassed a record of a record of 341-220 winning eight area championships. He spent the last two seasons as the head football coach at nearby Central Middle School in Carrollton, Georgia.

Season Outlook:

       The Cleburne County Tigers will play in Class 4A region three during the 2024 season. Following realignment, the Tigers remain in 4A but move from region four over to region three.

      

       The Tigers finished last season with a 4-7 record but did get in the playoffs with a fourth place finish in Region 4. It was their first playoff appearance since the 2015 football season.

       Can they build upon last season under first year head coach Vaughn Lee? Time will tell. Two new teams join them in the region with St. James moving up from 3A and Tallassee dropping down from 5A. So the competition for one of the playoff spots will be heated in 2024.

       The Tigers return just four players on each side of the football in 2024 so Coach Lee will be counting on a host of younger players to contribute if they have hopes of making a return trip to the post season this fall.

       Coach Lee told AHSFHS.org about his 2024 Tigers. ''Cleburne County will rely heavily on their 2 Seniors (Hunter Gore & Austin Mayfield) for leadership of a promising young group. Carter Hughes (Jr.) returns as last years leading rusher and Kendal Miller (Jr.) will be returning from knee surgery at Tight End. Sophomore LB/FB Silas Hunt will carry a huge load for the Tigers. Luke Adams will also be expected to be a 2 way starter at LB/OL.''

    The Tigers could find themselves challenging for one of the playoff spots for region three this season with a few breaks and a little improvement.

Season Opener:
       The Tigers open the 2024 season at home against non-region opponent Sardis on Friday, August 30 at L.E. Bell Field. Last year the Sardis Lions finished with an overall record of 6-4 and in fifth place in Class 5A region seven. The Lions ended last season on a positive note with a win over Hokes Bluff by a score of 42-20 after failing to gain a playoff spot.

       Cleburne County and Sardis have met a total of 3 times on the football field. The Tigers have a 2-1-0 record against the Lions. They last met in 2015 with Cleburne County winning by a score of 35-13.
