 2024 Preview

Shades Valley completed the 2023 season with a 4-5 record. Last year Shades Valley just missed making the playoffs with a fifth place finish in Class 6A region six with a 2-4 region record.

Since 2010, Shades Valley has gone a combined 63-84. Their 42.9% winning percentage ranks 43rd in Class 6A over the past fourteen seasons.

Over the past 25 seasons, Shades Valley has managed to compile a record of 103-161. Their 39.0% winning percentage ranks 45th in Class 6A and 275th in the AHSAA.

Head Coach:
The Mounties are led by head coach Reuben Nelson who is entering his fourth season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 12-16 over the past three seasons at Shades Valley. The Mounties have yet to reach the playoffs under his direction. They have not won a region crown with Coach Nelson. His 126 wins rank 47th among active coaches in the AHSAA. Over the course of his career, Coach Nelson's teams have qualified for the playoffs a total of twelve times and won five region championships. Coach Nelson won a state championship at Ramsay in 2016.

Season Outlook:

The Shades Valley Mounties will play in Class 6A region six during the 2024 season.

Since 2012 the Mounties have reached the playoffs five times in twelve seasons. The other seven years they finished fifth in their region. So they missed making twelve consecutive trips to the post season by one game in those seasons.

Playing in the same region with Clay-Chalkville, Mountain Brook, Oxford and Pinson Valley makes it very difficult to claim one of those elusive four playoff spots that are available each season.

The Mounties could find themselves challenging for one of the playoff spots for region six this season with a few breaks and a little improvement. Shades Valley has failed to qualify for the playoffs since 2020 but hope to return to the post season this year.

Season Opener:
The Mounties open the 2024 season at home against non-region opponent Woodlawn on Friday, August 23 at Frank A. Nix Memorial Athletic Complex. Last year the Woodlawn Colonels finished with an overall record of 2-7 and in sixth place in Class 6A region five. The Colonels ended last season on a positive note with a win over Shelby County by a score of 26-19 after failing to gain a playoff spot.

Shades Valley and Woodlawn have met a total of 32 times on the football field. The Mounties have a 19-13-0 record against the Colonels. They last met in 2021 with Shades Valley winning by a score of 35-13.
