2018 Preview | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Baker finished the 2017 season with a disappointing 3-7 record. Last year Baker finished eighth in Class 7A region one with a 2-6 region record and failed to qualify for the playoffs. Baker took a step backwards last year with their first losing season since 2010. The Hornets lost as many games as in any season since 2010. The Hornets last playoff victory came during the 1984 season. They would love to break through this year with a post season win. Baker was inconsistent offensively last year and they need some improvement if the Hornets want to be competitive. They only averaged 15.9 points a game. Since 2010, Baker has gone a combined 43-40. Their 52.0% winning percentage ranks 18th in Class 7A over the past eight seasons. Over the past 25 seasons, Baker has not won much with a record of 62-181. Their 26.0% winning percentage ranks 32nd in Class 7A and 358th in the AHSAA. The Hornets are led by head coach Danny Smith who is entering his fourth season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 15-16 over the past three seasons at Baker. Under his direction the Hornets have qualified for the playoffs once. They have not won a region crown with Coach Smith. Coach Smith's overall record as a head football coach in three season stands at 15-16 (48.4%). The Baker Hornets will play in Class 7A region one during the 2018 season. It will be an uphill battle for the Hornets if they hope to grab one of the four playoff slots in region one this season. The Hornets open the 2018 season at home against region opponent Theodore on Friday, August 31 at Hornet Field. Last year the Theodore Bobcats finished with an overall record of 6-5 and in fourth place in Class 7A region one. The Bobcats lost in the first round of the Class 7A playoffs to Central Phenix City by a score of 42-13. Baker and Theodore have met a total of 59 times on the football field. The Hornets have a 10-48-1 record against the Bobcats. They last met in 2017 with Theodore winning by a score of 26-14. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
