2018 Preview | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Bessemer City completed the 2017 season with a 4-7 record. With their 3-3 region record and a fourth place finish in Class 6A region four, the Purple Tigers earned a spot in the playoffs in 2017. Bessemer City's season came to an end in the first round of the playoffs when they fell to Park Crossing by a score of 35-6. The Purple Tigers lost as many games as in any season since 2011. Bessemer City was inconsistent offensively last year and they need some improvement if the Purple Tigers want to be competitive. They only averaged 19.6 points a game. Since 2010, Bessemer City has gone a combined 43-45. Their 49.0% winning percentage ranks 31st in Class 6A over the past eight seasons. Over the past 25 seasons, Bessemer City has managed to compile a record of 156-108. Their 59.0% winning percentage ranks 23rd in Class 6A and 104th in the AHSAA. The Purple Tigers will be under the direction of new head football coach Derone Fagan as they enter the 2018 season. The Bessemer City Purple Tigers will play in Class 6A region four during the 2018 season. With a little luck and some improvement, the Purple Tigers could find themselves challenging for one of the playoff spots for region four this season. The Purple Tigers open the 2018 season on the road against non-region opponent Huffman on Saturday, August 25 at Lawson Field. Last year the Huffman Vikings finished with an overall record of 4-6 and in seventh place in Class 7A region three. The Vikings ended last season on a positive note with a win over Bessemer City by a score of 12-7 after failing to gain a playoff spot. Bessemer City and Huffman have met a total of 12 times on the football field. The Purple Tigers have a 8-4-0 record against the Vikings. They last met in 2017 with Huffman winning by a score of 12-7. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
