2018 Preview | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Smiths Station finished the 2017 season with a disappointing 0-10 record. Last year Smiths Station finished seventh in Class 7A region two with a 0-6 region record and failed to qualify for the playoffs. The defense allowed a team record 460 points last season. The offense struggled putting points on the score board as Smiths Station averaged scoring just 3.7 points a game. The Panthers also struggled on the defensive side of the football as they found little success in stopping opposing offenses and allowed an average of 46.0 points a game. The Panthers would prefer to forget the past two seasons as they have finished with a 2-18 record. Since 2010, Smiths Station has gone a combined 39-45. Their 46.0% winning percentage ranks 21st in Class 7A over the past eight seasons. Over the past 25 seasons, Smiths Station has managed to compile a record of 124-131. Their 49.0% winning percentage ranks 23rd in Class 7A and 201st in the AHSAA. The Panthers will be under the direction of new head football coach Mike Glisson as they enter the 2018 season. Coach Glisson's overall record as a head football coach in two season stands at 7-14 (33.3%). Over the course of his career, Coach Glisson's teams have qualified for the playoffs a total of one time . The Smiths Station Panthers will play in Class 7A region two during the 2018 season. The Panthers enter the 2018 season in the middle of a 16 game losing streak. They would like nothing better than to end the string of losses early in the season. This season, the Panthers will be a long shot for one of the four playoff spots in region two. After not winning a single game last year, the goal at Smiths Station will be to simply win some games. The Panthers open the 2018 season at home against non-region opponent Russell County on Friday, August 24 at Panther Stadium. Last year the Russell County Warriors finished with an overall record of 3-7 and in sixth place in Class 6A region two. The Warriors ended last season on a positive note with a win over B.T. Washington by a score of 27-12 after failing to gain a playoff spot. Smiths Station and Russell County have met a total of 60 times on the football field. The Panthers have a 54-6-0 record against the Warriors. They last met in 2015 with Smiths Station winning by a score of 42-7. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
