2022 Preview | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Cordova finished the 2021 season with a disappointing 3-7 record. Last year Cordova finished sixth in Class 5A region five with a 1-6 region record and failed to qualify for the playoffs. Cordova was inconsistent offensively last year and they need some improvement if the Blue Devils want to be competitive. They only averaged 18.5 points a game. The Blue Devils would prefer to forget the past two seasons as they have finished with a 4-16 record. Since 2010, Cordova has gone a combined 67-68. Their 49.6% winning percentage ranks 29th in Class 4A over the past twelve seasons. Over the past 25 seasons, Cordova has managed to compile a record of 155-132. Their 54.0% winning percentage ranks 20th in Class 4A and 147th in the AHSAA. The Blue Devils are led by head coach Shane Smothers who is entering his second season at the helm. His team finished with a 3-7 record in his first season at Cordova. The Blue Devils saw improvement from a 1-9 record the season before coach Smothers arrived. The Blue Devils have yet to reach the playoffs under his direction. They have not won a region crown with Coach Smothers. Coach Smothers' overall record as a head football coach in twelve season stands at 65-66 (49.6%). Over the course of his career, Coach Smothers' teams have qualified for the playoffs a total of six times and won two region championships. The Cordova Blue Devils will play in Class 4A region five during the 2022 season. The Blue Devils may find the schedule slightly easier this season with the move down in classification from Class 5A to 4A. They will compete in region five this year. Overall, the region is among the weakest in the state. Qualifying for one of the playoffs spots could be a little easier. It will be an uphill battle for the Blue Devils if they hope to grab one of the four playoff slots in region five this season. The Blue Devils open the 2022 season at home against non-region opponent Fayette County on Thursday, August 18 at Hudson-Kerby Field. Last year the Fayette County Tigers finished with an overall record of 6-5 and in third place in Class 4A region five. The Tigers lost in the first round of the Class 4A playoffs to Randolph by a score of 38-0. Cordova and Fayette County have met a total of 12 times on the football field. The Blue Devils have a 2-10-0 record against the Tigers. They last met in 2019 with Fayette County winning by a score of 34-27. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
