2024 Preview | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Sand Rock finished the 2023 season with a disappointing 2-8 record. Last year Sand Rock just missed making the playoffs with a fifth place finish in Class 2A region seven with a 2-5 region record. The Wildcats lost as many games as in any season since 2004. The defense allowed a team record 351 points last season. Sand Rock was inconsistent offensively last year and they need some improvement if the Wildcats want to be competitive. They only averaged 16.1 points a game. Sand Rock struggled on the defensive side of the football last year. The defense found little success in stopping opposing offenses as they gave up an average of 35.1 points a game. Since 2010, Sand Rock has gone a combined 76-72. Their 51.4% winning percentage ranks 27th in Class 2A over the past fourteen seasons. Over the past 25 seasons, Sand Rock has managed to compile a record of 147-122. Their 55.0% winning percentage ranks 16th in Class 2A and 133rd in the AHSAA. Head Coach: The Wildcats are led by head coach Alan Heath who is entering his fifth season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 16-25 over the past four seasons at Sand Rock. Under his direction the Wildcats have qualified for the playoffs once. They have not won a region crown with Coach Heath. Season Outlook: The Sand Rock Wildcats will play in Class 2A region seven during the 2024 season. The Wildcats finished last year with a disappointing 2-8 record. It is their worst showing since the 2004 football season. They also missed the playoffs for the second consecutive year. The Wildcats will open the season more experienced than last year with eight seniors returning after losing just three seniors in the spring to graduation. Coach Heath says they will have more experience at most every position. The Wildcats will need to win a few more games this fall if they hope to grab one of the four playoff slots in region seven this season. After just 2 wins last year, Sand Rock will be hoping to become more competitive in the region. Players to Watch in 2024: QB Alec Ashley will be returning for his sophomore season after completing 57-of-110 passes for 772 yards and 8 TDs last season. Returning Starters: STARTERS: QB- Alec Ashley, OL/DE- Seth Holland, LB- Caiden Bullard, FB- Kane Robison, H-Back/LB- Gatlin Cox Season Opener: The Wildcats open the 2024 season on the road against non-region opponent Spring Garden on Friday, August 23 at Panther Stadium. Last year the Spring Garden Panthers finished with an overall record of 8-3 and in second place in Class 1A region six. The Panthers lost in the first round of the Class 1A playoffs to Coosa Christian by a score of 28-0. Sand Rock and Spring Garden have met a total of 36 times on the football field. The Wildcats have a 24-12-0 record against the Panthers. They last met in 2023 with Spring Garden winning by a score of 48-22. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
