 2024 Preview

Fayetteville finished the 2023 season with a disappointing 3-7 record. Last year Fayetteville finished seventh in Class 2A region four with a 1-6 region record and failed to qualify for the playoffs.

Fayetteville struggled on the defensive side of the football last year. The defense found little success in stopping opposing offenses as they gave up an average of 38.1 points a game.

Since 2010, Fayetteville has gone a combined 50-93. Their 35.0% winning percentage ranks 39th in Class 1A over the past fourteen seasons.

Over the past 25 seasons, Fayetteville has not won much with a record of 78-174. Their 31.0% winning percentage ranks 52nd in Class 1A and 352nd in the AHSAA.

Head Coach:
The Wolves are led by head coach John Limbaugh who is entering his thirteenth season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 46-77 over the past twelve seasons at Fayetteville. Under his direction the Wolves have qualified for the playoffs a total of two times. They have won one region crown with Coach Limbaugh.

Season Outlook:

The Fayetteville Wolves will play in Class 1A region six during the 2024 season. The Wolves may find the schedule slightly easier this season with the move down in classification from Class 2A to 1A. They will compete in region six this year.

The Fayetteville Wolves will be looking forward to the 2024 football season. Especially Coach Limbaugh since they will dropping back down to 1A after spending the past ten seasons in 2A. They will be joined in Region 6 by Woodland who also dropped from 2A.

The Wolves open the season against 3A Childersburg then Billingsley before opening region play against Wadley. They would like nothing better than to get back to the playoffs, something they have not done since the 2019 football season. Only two teams currently in Region 6 made the playoffs in 2023 (Wadley and Winterboro).

Coach Limbaugh told AHSFHS.org ''Returning Junior running back Cameron Hammonds looks to build upon a stellar sophomore season in which he rushed for over 1200 yards and contributed more than 20 all-purpose touchdowns. Other names to look out for on offense are Brenton Cantrell at QB and Carter Goins at WR. On the defensive side, Senior DB Cole Hardy leads the way with Juniors Aiden Blair and Ross Thomas stepping into starting spots at middle backer.''

''With the drop from a very difficult 2A region and into 1A, it's playoffs or bust for the Wolves in 2024. Coach John Limbaugh is the only football coach in Fayetteville history to boast more than one playoff appearance. Can the Wolves give him a third? With key starters returning at QB and RB and a mix of hungry new faces on both sides of the ball, expect Fayetteville to make a strong push to be playing into November.''

The Wolves could find themselves challenging for one of the playoff spots for region six this season with a few breaks and a little improvement. Fayetteville has failed to qualify for the playoffs since 2019 but hope to return to the post season this year.

Players to Watch in 2024:
RB Cameron Hammonds will be back after rushing for 1,282 yards and 16 TDs last season.

Returning Starters:
WR Carter Goins, RB Cameron Hammonds, QB Brenton Cantrell and RB/LB Aiden Blair, OL/DL Landon Thomas

Season Opener:
The Wolves open the 2024 season at home against non-region opponent Childersburg on Friday, August 23 at FarmLinks Field. Last year the Childersburg Tigers finished with an overall record of 4-6 and in fifth place in Class 3A region four. The Tigers closed out the regular season with a loss to Winterboro by a score of 24-20.

Fayetteville and Childersburg have met a total of 3 times on the football field. The Wolves have a 1-2-0 record against the Tigers. They last met in 2021 with Childersburg winning by a score of 39-0.
