2018 Preview | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Guntersville completed the 2017 season with a 9-2 record. With their 6-1 region record and a second place finish in Class 5A region seven, the Wildcats earned a spot in the playoffs in 2017. Guntersville's season came to an end in the first round of the playoffs when they fell to St. Clair County by a score of 28-21. The defense was very stingy last season as Guntersville ranked 2nd in the AHSAA. The defense allowed only 7.3 points a game. Since 2010, Guntersville has gone a combined 68-24. Their 74.0% winning percentage ranks 4th in Class 5A over the past eight seasons. Over the past 25 seasons, Guntersville has gone a combined 184-91. Their 67.0% winning percentage ranks 7th in Class 5A and 44th in the AHSAA. The Wildcats are led by head coach Lance Reese who is entering his ninth season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 68-24 over the past eight seasons at Guntersville. Under his direction the Wildcats have qualified for the playoffs a total of seven times. They have won two region crowns with Coach Reese. Coach Reese's overall record as a head football coach in eight season stands at 68-24 (73.9%). The Guntersville Wildcats will play in Class 5A region eight during the 2018 season. Following realignment, the Wildcats remain in 5A but move from region seven over to region eight. The Wildcats enter the 2018 season riding a 7 game regular season winning streak. The Wildcats should be considered one of the favorites for the region eight championship this season and a home game in the first round of the playoffs. The Wildcats open the 2018 season at home against non-region opponent North Jackson on Friday, August 24 at Chorba-Lee Stadium. Last year the North Jackson Chiefs finished with an overall record of 2-8 and in sixth place in Class 4A region seven. The Chiefs closed out the regular season with a loss to Buckhorn by a score of 40-14. Guntersville and North Jackson have met a total of 22 times on the football field. The Wildcats have a 9-13-0 record against the Chiefs. They last met in 2015 with Guntersville winning by a score of 33-21. Guntersville returns 5A All-State punter Zack Godwin. He was named to the first team last season. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
