2018 Preview | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Boaz finished the 2017 season with a disappointing 3-7 record. Last year Boaz finished seventh in Class 5A region seven with a 2-5 region record and failed to qualify for the playoffs. Boaz struggled on the defensive side of the football last year. The defense found little success in stopping opposing offenses as they gave up an average of 36.3 points a game. The Pirates would prefer to forget the past two seasons as they have finished with a 4-16 record. Since 2010, Boaz has gone a combined 33-51. Their 39.0% winning percentage ranks 42nd in Class 5A over the past eight seasons. Over the past 25 seasons, Boaz has managed to compile a record of 119-136. Their 47.0% winning percentage ranks 35th in Class 5A and 222nd in the AHSAA. The Pirates are led by head coach Jeremy Sullivan who is entering his second season at the helm. His team finished with a 3-7 record in his first season at Boaz. The Pirates saw improvement from a 1-9 record the season before coach Sullivan arrived. The Pirates have yet to reach the playoffs under his direction. They have not won a region crown with Coach Sullivan. Coach Sullivan's overall record as a head football coach in three season stands at 10-20 (33.3%). The Boaz Pirates will play in Class 5A region six during the 2018 season. Following realignment, the Pirates remain in 5A but move from region seven over to region six. It will be an uphill battle for the Pirates if they hope to grab one of the four playoff slots in region six this season. The Pirates open the 2018 season on the road against non-region opponent Arab on Friday, August 24 at Arab Stadium. Last year the Arab Arabian Knights finished with an overall record of 2-8 and in sixth place in Class 5A region seven. Boaz and Arab have met a total of 63 times on the football field. The Pirates have a 18-44-1 record against the Arabian Knights. They last met in 2017 with Arab winning by a score of 46-24. Boaz returns 5A All-State receiver Taylor Smith. He was named to the honorable mention team last season. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
