 2018 Preview

Murphy finished the 2017 season with a disappointing 3-7 record. Last year Murphy finished sixth in Class 7A region one with a 3-5 region record and failed to qualify for the playoffs.

Murphy took a step backwards last year with their first losing season since 2003. The Panthers lost as many games as in any season since 2003. The Panthers had some tough luck last season as four of their seven losses were by less than eight points.

Since 2010, Murphy has gone a combined 49-38. Their 56.0% winning percentage ranks 15th in Class 7A over the past eight seasons.

Over the past 25 seasons, Murphy has managed to compile a record of 166-102. Their 62.0% winning percentage ranks 11th in Class 7A and 72nd in the AHSAA.

The Panthers are led by head coach Muskingum Barnes who is entering his second season at the helm. His team finished with a 3-7 record in his first season at Murphy. The Panthers have yet to reach the playoffs under his direction. They have not won a region crown with Coach Barnes.

Coach Barnes' overall record as a head football coach in one season stands at 3-7 (30.0%).

The Murphy Panthers will play in Class 7A region one during the 2018 season.

With a little luck and some improvement, the Panthers could find themselves challenging for one of the playoff spots for region one this season. Murphy came up short of the playoffs last year but are optimistic of a return to the post season this year.

The Panthers open the 2018 season on the road against non-region opponent Baldwin County on Friday, August 24 at Simmons Field. Last year the Baldwin County Tigers finished with an overall record of 7-3 and in fifth place in Class 6A region one. The Tigers closed out the regular season with a loss to Daphne by a score of 24-3.

Murphy and Baldwin County have met a total of 29 times on the football field. The Panthers have a 18-11-0 record against the Tigers. They last met in 2005 with Murphy winning by a score of 34-7.
