 2018 Preview

Talladega completed the 2017 season with a 6-5 record. With their 3-3 region record and a fourth place finish in Class 5A region four, the Tigers earned a spot in the playoffs in 2017. Talladega's season came to an end in the first round of the playoffs when they fell to Carroll by a score of 12-6.

The Tigers improved in 2017 with their first winning season since 1994. The Tigers won as many games as in any season since 1994. It marked the first time since the 1995 season that the Tigers qualified for the playoffs. The Tigers have never won a playoff game in the school's history. They would like to break through and pick up that first post season victory in 2018.

Since 2010, the Talladega football program has struggled with a record of 22-57.

Over the past 25 seasons, Talladega has not won much with a record of 54-187. Their 22.0% winning percentage ranks 57th in Class 4A and 370th in the AHSAA. The Tigers have struggled on the football field with only three winning seasons during this time.

The Tigers are led by head coach Ted Darby who is entering his second season at the helm. His team finished with a 6-5 record in his first season at Talladega. The Tigers saw improvement from a 3-7 record the season before coach Darby arrived. Under his direction the Tigers have qualified for the playoffs once. They have not won a region crown with Coach Darby.

Coach Darby's overall record as a head football coach in two season stands at 6-14 (30.0%). Over the course of his career, Coach Darby's teams have qualified for the playoffs a total of one time .

The Talladega Tigers will play in Class 4A region four during the 2018 season. The Tigers may find the schedule slightly easier this season with the move down in classification from Class 5A to 4A. They will compete in region four this year.

Overall, the region is among the weakest in the state. Qualifying for one of the playoffs spots could be a little easier. The Tigers should be in contention for a playoff spot in region four this season. They will be looking to gain an advantage by hosting a first round postseason game.

The Tigers open the 2018 season at home against non-region opponent Alexandria on Friday, August 24 at Mary Dumas Stadium. Last year the Alexandria Valley Cubs finished with an overall record of 8-3 and in third place in Class 5A region seven. The Valley Cubs lost in the first round of the Class 5A playoffs to Wenonah by a score of 40-14.

Talladega and Alexandria have met a total of 13 times on the football field. The Tigers have a 6-7-0 record against the Valley Cubs. They last met in 2017 with Alexandria winning by a score of 37-0.
