 2022 Preview 


       Walter Wellborn completed the 2021 season with a 5-5 record. With their 4-3 region record and a fourth place finish in Class 3A region five, the Panthers earned a spot in the playoffs in 2021. Walter Wellborn's season came to an end in the first round of the playoffs when they fell to Fyffe by a score of 34-0.

       Since 2010, Walter Wellborn has gone a combined 84-49. Their 63.2% winning percentage ranks 15th in Class 3A over the past twelve seasons.

       Over the past 25 seasons, Walter Wellborn has managed to compile a record of 126-139. Their 48.0% winning percentage ranks 37th in Class 3A and 215th in the AHSAA.




       The Panthers are led by head coach Jeff Smith who is entering his fourteenth season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 88-56 over the past thirteen seasons at Walter Wellborn. Under his direction the Panthers have qualified for the playoffs a total of ten times. They have not won a region crown with Coach Smith.

       Coach Smith's overall record as a head football coach in twenty-five season stands at 164-111 (59.6%). His 164 wins rank 22nd among active coaches in the AHSAA. Over the course of his career, Coach Smith's teams have qualified for the playoffs a total of seventeen times and won one region championship.

       The Walter Wellborn Panthers will play in Class 3A region four during the 2022 season. Following realignment, the Panthers remain in 3A but move from region five over to region four.

       The Panthers will be in the mix for one of the last two playoff spots in region four this season.

       The Panthers open the 2022 season at home against non-region opponent Anniston on Friday, August 19 at The Hill. Last year the Anniston Bulldogs finished with an overall record of 5-5 and in fourth place in Class 4A region four. The Bulldogs lost in the first round of the Class 4A playoffs to St. James by a score of 28-26.

       Walter Wellborn and Anniston have met a total of 37 times on the football field. The Panthers have a 16-20-1 record against the Bulldogs. They last met in 2021 with Anniston winning by a score of 38-7.

  


Great Moments in Alabama High School Football History

Parrish scored a record 77 points in a playoff game against Cedar Bluff in 2001. The Tornados were shutout the following week 19-0 by Courtland.
