2024 Preview | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Paul Bryant finished the 2023 season with a disappointing 3-7 record. Last year Paul Bryant finished sixth in Class 6A region four with a 2-5 region record and failed to qualify for the playoffs. The Stampede have never won a playoff game in the school's history. They would like to break through and pick up that first post season victory in 2024. Paul Bryant was inconsistent offensively last year and they need some improvement if the Stampede want to be competitive. They only averaged 18.1 points a game. The Stampede would prefer to forget the past two seasons as they have finished with a 4-16 record. Since 2010, Paul Bryant has gone a combined 53-90. Their 37.1% winning percentage ranks 49th in Class 6A over the past fourteen seasons. Over the past 21 seasons, Paul Bryant has not won much with a record of 68-145. Their 32.0% winning percentage ranks 54th in Class 6A and 343rd in the AHSAA. Coaching Change: John McKenzie leaves Paul Bryant after only one season with a 3-7 record. In late July he accepted the head coaching job at Vigor a school he has previously coached. 2024 Head Coach: Christion Jones Season Outlook: The Paul Bryant Stampede will play in Class 6A region four during the 2024 season. The first goal at Paul Bryant under second year head football coach John McKenzie has to be to get one of the four playoff spots in Region 4. That would be a step forward for a team that has not been to the post season since 2019 and has never hosted or won a playoff game. Only three opponents on the Stampede's 2024 schedule qualified for the playoffs last season and all of those three were in their region. The Stampede will need to win a few more games this fall if they hope to grab one of the four playoff slots in region four this season. OLB Zay Hall will be back after collecting 77 tackles (47 solo) as a sophomore last season. Returning Starters: Zay Hall, ATH Miles Madden Season Opener: The Stampede open the 2024 season at home against non-region opponent Percy Julian on Friday, August 23 at Stampede Stadium. Last year the Percy Julian Phoenix finished with an overall record of 5-5 and in sixth place in Class 7A region two. The Phoenix closed out the regular season with a loss to Enterprise by a score of 55-13. Paul Bryant and Percy Julian have met a total of 2 times on the football field. The Stampede have a 0-2-0 record against the Phoenix. They last met in 2003 with Percy Julian winning by a score of 31-20. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
