2024 Preview | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Calera finished the 2023 season with a disappointing 0-10 record. Last year Calera finished seventh in Class 6A region three with a 0-6 region record and failed to qualify for the playoffs. The Eagles lost as many games as in any season since 1993. The defense allowed a team record 433 points last season. The offense struggled putting points on the score board as Calera averaged scoring just 9.2 points a game. The Eagles also struggled on the defensive side of the football as they found little success in stopping opposing offenses and allowed an average of 43.3 points a game. The Eagles would prefer to forget the past two seasons as they have finished with a 4-17 record. Since 2010, Calera has gone a combined 76-77. Their 49.7% winning percentage ranks 32nd in Class 6A over the past fourteen seasons. Over the past 25 seasons, Calera has managed to compile a record of 151-125. Their 55.0% winning percentage ranks 33rd in Class 6A and 155th in the AHSAA. Coaching Change: Jerad Holder had just one season in Calera as his team posted an 0-10 record in Class 6A region 3. The Eagles have had one winning season over the past six years and need to bring some stability to the program. Since the move up to 6A they are just 16-46 in 6 seasons. This will be the ninth new hire in Calera over the past twenty football seasons. 2024 Head Coach: Scott Rials arrives in Calera in hopes of rebuilding the football program there. Although his teams at Baldwin County found the going tough he does have a track record of winning and sustaining a successful football program in the past at Elba and Luverne. His overall record is 185-111 in 27 seasons as a head football coach at South Montgomery Academy, Elba, Luverne, Satsuma and Baldwin County. The community is in hopes Coach Rials can bring stability to an up and down program in Calera. His 185 wins rank 20th among active coaches in the AHSAA. Over the course of his career, Coach Rials' teams have qualified for the playoffs a total of eighteen times and won five region championships. Coach Rials won a state championship at Elba in 2011. Season Outlook: The Calera Eagles will play in Class 6A region three during the 2024 season. The Eagles enter the 2024 season in the middle of a 13 game losing streak. They would like nothing better than to end the string of losses early in the season. The Eagles missed the playoffs in 2023 after making a trip to the post season the three previous seasons. But they have not won a playoff games since 2017 under Andrew Zow. Their 0-10 record is the worst since 1993 so there is definitely room for improvement. Scott Rials becomes the sixth head football coach in the past ten seasons at Calera. Could his arrival mean the fortunes of the football program are turning around? He has been very successful in the past at building programs and the Eagle fans would like nothing better in 2024 and beyond. With the addition of Spain Park and Chelsea to Region 3 it will only get tougher to claim one of the three coveted playoff spots come November. It will be a rebuilding job at Calera as they will need to find replacement players for most every position on both sides of the football according to Coach Rials. Coach Rials told us. ''We are excited for a new start to reestablish Calera football. We are committed to ''Fly As One''.'' This season, the Eagles will be a long shot for one of the four playoff spots in region three. After not winning a single game last year, the goal at Calera will be to simply win some games. Season Opener: The Eagles open the 2024 season at home against non-region opponent Northridge on Friday, August 23 at Ricky M. Cairns Memorial Stadium. Last year the Northridge Jaguars finished with an overall record of 3-7 and in seventh place in Class 6A region four. The Jaguars ended last season on a positive note with a win over Alma Bryant by a score of 21-18 after failing to gain a playoff spot. This will be the second meeting between Calera and Northridge on the football field. The Eagles have a 0-1-0 record against the Jaguars.
