Alabama All-Star Game

1980

The less-heralded South stars captured a 20-7 victory behind the offensive punch of Sam DeJarnette of Selma and Walter Lewis of T.R. Miller along with the defensive leadership of Linzal Chapman of Enterprise. Dejarnette carried 24 times for 86 yards and a touchdown pacing the South's fifth consecutive triumph in the 33 year-old series. Lewis scored two touchdowns and tacked on 35 yards rushing while fullback Lamar Windham of Vigor added 34 yards on seven carries.

Dejarnette was named the game's most valuable back and Chapman, who recovered a pair of fumbles at defensive end, was the most valuable lineman.

The favored North, boasting halfbacks Linnie Patrick of Walker and Reginald Goodloe of Colbert County, managed just 26 yards rushing and 32 passing. Patrick, playing with a torn ligament in his left thumb, gained only 20 yards on seven carries. Randy Harris of Walker caught a deflected pass and ran 59 yards for the lone North touchdown.

Great Moments in Alabama High School Football History

Luverne 'Toad' Wise was the first female football player in Alabama and may have been the first in the country. She was a kicker for the Escambia County Blue Devils in 1939-40.
